🪽 Rare black storks spotted at Lake Sibolla

ALTOPASCIO (Lucca) — Three rare young black storks stopped at the Lago di Sibolla nature reserve in Altopascio, Lucca, during their migration from Europe to tropical Africa. Announced by the LIPU bird conservation group the sighting marks only the second recent appearance of the species at the reserve. While black storks returned to nest in Italy in 1994 after a millennium, the population remains under 50 breeding pairs and faces threats from wind turbines, power lines and poaching. PIAZZA AL SERCHIO (Lucca) – The historic village of San Michele, located in the mountainous Garfagnana area of Piazza al Serchio, will step back in time for its annual Medieval Festival on Aug. 7–8. Visitors can experience an authentic atmosphere of bygone eras starting at 7:30 each evening, featuring an immersive traveling food and wine tour designed to highlight traditional regional dishes. In addition to the culinary offerings, the weekend celebration will host lively historical reenactments, entertaining performances and bustling artisanal craft markets winding through the scenic streets. The Camp Darby JAG office will remain open during the upcoming Army in Europe DONSA/4-day pass (Aug 07-10), but due to the Lawyer being on pass (CONUS), Notarial/ Power of Attorney services will be not available.

Thursday, Aug 6 will be the last day to do a POA at our office if one is needed to conduct business at vehicle registration or acquire a PoA.

Normal operations will resume on Aug. 11

Today, U.S. military personnel joined the community of Pian di Novello in commemorating the liberation of the village, honoring the courage and sacrifice of all who lost their lives during World War II—Allied service members, Italians, and partisans.

Representing the U.S. military were personnel from the U.S. Air Force 731st Ammunition Squadron, the U.S.Army Garrison, Italy, Darby Military Community, and the 405th Army Field Support Battalion. Their participation reflected the enduring commitment to remembering the shared history and partnership between the United States and Italy.

Timothy Andersen, Deputy Garrison Manager, delivered a commemorative address, emphasizing the importance of preserving the legacy of those who fought for freedom and the responsibility of future generations to carry those lessons forward.

Also in attendance were Councilor Lorenzo Ferrari, representing the Mayor of Abetone Cutigliano, and Anna Buonomini, President of the Pistoia Mountain Partisan Association.

Together, the speakers underscored the importance of preserving historical memory and learning from the past while continuing to uphold the enduring values of democracy, freedom, unity, and peace.

📌 The Darby Community Connect (DCC) meeting, originally set for Wednesday, 22 July 2026, has been postponed to Wednesday, 29 July 2026, due to a calendar conflict with a Distinguished Visitor.

To ensure our community receives the full, uninterrupted briefings from all key service agencies, we have adjusted our timeline by one week. The updated event details are as follows:

• Event: Darby Community Connect (DCC) Meeting (formerly CLIF)
• Date: Wednesday, 29 July 2026 (Rescheduled from 22 July)
• Time: 09:00
• Location: Darby Community Center (DCC), Building 204

Hosted by the Deputy Garrison Manager (DGM), this in-person assembly remains a vital opportunity for representatives to present service updates extending through October 2026. Following the briefings, there will still be a dedicated question-and-answer segment for community members to engage directly with the presenters and the DGM.
Tenant unit leaders are highly encouraged to share relevant announcements and items of interest with the assembly.

BIENTINA (Pisa) – The town of Bientina will host the last three weekends of the 23rd edition of the 𝘍𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘛𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘰 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘰 on July 18–19; 25–26 and Aug. 1–2. Headquartered at the local sports field, the food stalls will open for dinner starting at 7 p.m., offering both open-air and indoor dining options. The menu spotlights fried squid alongside other seafood specialties like seafood risotto, grilled prawns, and cacciucco, supplemented by grilled meats and pizzas. Due to the traditional Palio di San Valentino on July 18–19, town center closures will require visitors to use the ring road to reach the venue, where free five-a-side football pitches will also be available for children. SINALUNGA (Siena) – The medieval historic center of Sinalunga will host the annual 𝘓’ 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘰 festival from Friday, July 17, to Sunday, July 19. Centered around Piazza Garibaldi and its surrounding streets, the free-admission event features an international lineup of artists, including aerial dance, juggling and fire shows. The festival grounds will be animated by traveling marching bands, stilt walkers, and puppet theater alongside a craft market, live body painting and local art exhibitions. Families can access a dedicated street food area and a children’s area featuring face painting and handmade wooden games.
