"And then, sudden and terrible from the tower above; the sound of the great Horn of Helm rang out.

All that heard that sound trembled, many of the orcs cast themselves on their faces and covered their ears with their claws, back from the deep it came, blast upon blast as if on every cliff and hill a mighty herald stood.

But on the walls men looked up, listening with wonder; for the echoes did not die- ever the echos did not die- ever the horn blasts wound on among the hills- nearer now and louder they answered one to another, blowing fierce and free.

'Helm! Helm!' The Riders shouted 'Helm has arisen and comes back to war! Helm for Theoden King!' "

"He let blow the horns to rally all men to his banner that could come thither, for he thought to make a great shield wall at the last and stand and fight there on foot till all fell, and do deeds of song on the fields of pelennor though no man be left to sing of them in the mark."

'Out of doubt, out of dark, to the days rising,
I came singing in the sun,
To hopes end I rode,
And to heart's breaking,
Now for wrath, now for ruin,
And a red nightfall!'

Out, leapt the King under the mountain, and his companions followed him- hood and cloak were gone they were in shining mail and red light leapt from their eyes.

Wolf and rider fell or fled before them, Thorin wielded his axe with mighty strokes and nothing seemed to harm him.

"To me, to me! Elves and men, to me! O' my kinsfolk!" He cried, and his voice shook like a horn in the valley. Down, headless of order rushed all the Dwarves of Dain to his help, down too came many of the lake men, for Bard could not restrain them, and down too on the other side came many of the spearman of the Elves.

Once again the Goblins were stricken in the valley untill Dale was dark and hideous with their corpses. The Wargs were scattered and Thorin drove right against the bodyguard of Bolg.

It occurs to me that part of being human is the longing, or perhaps even need, for the experiences of courage, selflessness, heroism, service, and transcendence. Young men have traditionally been led to believe that war will provide the sole context for these experiences. We’re heir to that first human whose wholehearted commitment to bravery, selflessness, and service provided security for his family and tribe.

The connection between the young boy of 500,000 years ago who learned to throw a spear from his father, and his twentieth-century incarnation who is taught marksmanship from his father, endures in the long muscles of our back, the sensitive grip of our hands, and our ability to stand upright and to look forward, with vision, across the plains, and then abstractly back into the lives of our ancestors.

The urge that moved our warrior ancestor to pit his hunting skills against an opponent is replicated by us not only in war, but through the martial arts, sports, and even our recent paint-pellet war games. In our oral and written traditions the Greeks’ Mars, Ares from the Romans, Christianity’s St. James and St. George, the Africans’ Ogu, Hinduism’s Krishna and Arjuna, Islam’s Mohammed, and the sword-bearing Manjusuri of the Buddhists are warrior spirits awakening our consciousness to the trumpet call of battle.

Then many quailed; but Fëanor hardened his heart and said: "We have sworn, and not lightly. This oath we will keep. We are threatened with many evils, and treason not least; but one thing is not said: that we shall suffer from cowardice, from cravens or the fear of cravens. Therefore I say that we will go on, and this doom I add: the deeds that we shall do shall be the matter of song until the last days of Arda."

when the messengers reported to Manwe the answers of Feanor to his
heralds Manwe wept and bowed his head. But at that last word of Feanor: that at the least the Noldor should do deeds to live in song for ever: he raised his head, as one that hears a voice afar off, and he said: ‘So shall it be! Dear-bought those songs shall be accounted, and yet shall be well-bought. For the price could be no other. Thus, even as Eru spoke to us, shall beauty not before conceived be brought into Ea, and evil yet be good to have been.’

“There suddenly upon a ridge appeared a rider, clad in white, shining in the rising sun. Over the low hills the horns were sounding. Behind him, hastening down the long slopes, were a thousand men on foot; their swords were in their hands. Amid them strode a man tall and strong. His shield was red. As he came to the valley’s brink, he set to his lips a great black horn and blew a ringing blast. ‘Erkenbrand!’ the Riders shouted. 'Erkenbrand!’ Down from the hills leaped Erkenbrand, lord of Westfold."

And then, sudden and terrible, from the tower above, the sound of the great horn of Helm rang out.

Back from the Deep the echoes came, blast upon blast, as if on every cliff and hill a mighty herald stood. But on the walls men looked up, listening with wonder; for the echoes did not die. Ever the horn-blasts wound on among the hills; nearer now and louder they answered one to another, blowing fierce and free.

“Helm! Helm!” the Riders shouted. “Helm is arisen and comes back to war. Helm for Theoden King!” And with that shout the king came. His horse was white as snow, golden was his shield, and his spear was long. At his right hand was Aragorn, Elendil’s heir, behind him rode the lords of the House of Eorl the Young. Light sprang in the sky. Night departed.

“Forth Eorlingas!” With a cry and a great noise they charged. Down from the gates they roared, over the causeway they swept, and they drove through the hosts of Isengard as a wind among grass. Behind them from the Deep came the stern cries of men issuing from the caves, driving forth the enemy. Out poured all the men that were left upon the Rock. And ever the sound of blowing horns echoed in the hills.

A sword rang as it was drawn. 'Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may.'

'Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!'

Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed.... 'But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.'

-the helm of her secrecy had fallen from her, and her bright hair... gleamed with pale gold upon her shoulders. Her eyes grey as the sea were hard and fell, and yet tears were on her cheek. A sword was in her hand, and she raised her shield against the horror of her enemy's eyes.

"Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry. There many foes he fought,

His cloven shield, his broken sword, they to the water brought.

His head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest,

And Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, bore him upon its breast."
