Il piccolo borgo medioevale di Sassofortino si trova in una posizione di incontro tra il mare e la montagna, a circa 60 km da Siena, 5 km da Roccastrada, 3 km da Roccatederighi e soli 25 km dalla suggestiva abbazia di San Galgano. Un paesaggio dove Madre Natura ha fatto convivere uliveti e vigneti, boschi di querce, castagni maestosi e paesaggi fluviali del Farma-Merse e d’Ombrone, alcuni dei quali sono adatti anche per il nuoto, il rafting ed il kayak, in oltre offre la possibilità di praticare bouldering nell'area nei pressi del castello medioevale, il Sassoforte. Ad un palmo di mano si possono raggiungere le aeree protette come l’oasi del Farma-Merse, la Riserva Naturale della Diaccia Botrona a Castiglione della Pescaia, il Parco Naturale della Maremma ad Alberese ed il parco naturale della Sterpaia appena passata Follonica. Il bagno termale con sorgenti sulfuree calde del Petriolo è a solo 25 km e le regioni vinicole del Chianti e del Brunello (Montalcino a 40 km) sono facilmente accessibili. Marina di Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala e Follonica sono alla distanza di uno sguardo mentre, più distante, ma facilmente raggiungibile con superstrada, si trova l’Argentario. Sarete tuttavia non lontano dalle più importanti città d’arte toscane: Siena, Firenze e Pisa e comunque raggiungibili in una giornata sono Roma, Assisi, Cortona e Volterra. Sassofortino è una ottima base per chi ha voglia di trascorrere periodi di totale relax a contatto con la natura o per praticare sport in una natura selvaggia ed incontaminata o per lasciarsi accompagnare verso un turismo culturale e per seguire percorsi enogastronomici, tutto questo a prezzi ragionevoli in un angolo di Toscana accogliente e familiare. La località è nominata per la prima volta nel secolo XII in documenti d'archivio. Riferimenti al castello di Sassoforte, invece, risalgono al 1076, in un atto di donazione da parte del conte Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi alla chiesa di Montemassi. Nel Duecento il castello era dominato dai signori di Sassoforte e nel 1221 l'imperatore Federico II prese sotto la sua protezione i membri della famiglia, Uguccione e i giovani fratelli, vassalli degli Aldobrandeschi. Con il passare del tempo i signori di Sassoforte decisero di appoggiare i ghibellini, entrando così in contrasto con gli Aldobrandeschi, per difendersi dai quali si sottomisero nel 1254 ai senesi. Nella seconda metà del duecento i Conti di Sassoforte erano in lotta continua con gli altri potentati locali: i Pannocchieschi, i signori di Torniella o, ancora, gli Aldobrandeschi. Siena non appoggiava una politica così aggressiva, per questo, nel 1330, il suo governo guelfo, favorì la conquista del castello da parte dei conti Aldobrandeschi di Santa Fiora, per poi acquistarlo da questi ultimi. Anche se le fortificazioni di Sassoforte vennero distrutte, per tutto il Trecento il castello fu abitato, ma a causa della peste de delle cattive condizioni di vita a partire dal 1340 si contavano a Sassoforte non più di una cinquantina di persone. Nel 1368 diventa proprietaria del castello la famiglia senese dei Salimbeni, ma il degrado continua e il castello viene definitivamente abbandonato nel corso del Quattrocento. I suoi abitanti ora sono tutti nel borgo di Sassofortino. Il Borgo offre momenti di festa e sagre tipiche della cultura toscana e maremmana durante il mese di agosto ed una suggestiva Festa della Castagna nei giorni intorno al 1 novembre. The town is mentioned for the first time in the twelfth century in archive documents. References to the castle Sassoforte, however, date back to 1076, in a deed of gift from the Count Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi to the Church of Montemassi. In the thirteenth century the castle was dominated by the lords of Sassoforte and in 1221 Emperor Frederick II took under his protection the family members, Uguccione and young brothers, vassals of the Aldobrandeschi. After the lords of Sassoforte decided to support the Ghibellines, thus entering into conflict with the Aldobrandeschi, to defend against what they submitted in 1254 to the Sienese. In the second half of the thirteenth century, the Counts of Sassoforte were constantly battling with other local potentates: Pannocchieschi, the lords of Torniella or even the Aldobrandeschi. Siena did not support a policy so aggressive, why, in 1330, his government Guelph, facilitated the conquest of the castle by the Aldobrandeschi of Santa Fiora, and then buy it from them.
