Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), spoke Tuesday at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi. The event, themed "Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties And The Judiciary Save African Democracy," was chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.
Obi reflected on his own three-year legal battle over the 2003 Anambra governorship election, recalling that five judges he had never met ruled in his favour at both the trial court and the Court of Appeal. He said that level of judicial independence would be difficult to replicate in Nigeria today.
He went further, alleging that university professors serving as election returning officers have facilitated rigging in favour of unqualified candidates, that some Senior Advocates of Nigeria now defend forgery cases, that lawmakers have weakened forgery as an electoral offence, and that religious leaders are praying blessings over what he called "criminal politicians."
Obi called on Nigerians to reject bad governance, injustice, and political manipulation, warning that the country's current trajectory will shape what future generations inherit.

Ahead of Saturday's Osun State governorship election, Afrobeats superstar Davido stepped out of the studio and into the political arena — addressing journalists at Imole House, Osogbo, on security, INEC preparedness, and electoral transparency.
His message, in his own words: "No political ambition, disagreement or election is worth the life of any Osun son or daughter."
Key points from his address:
Called on ALL candidates — not just his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke — to respect whatever verdict the people deliver at the polls
Urged security agencies and INEC to ensure a credible, transparent process
Appealed directly to APC National Campaign Council Chairman, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, not to turn Osun into "a political battleground to prove a point"
Encouraged every eligible voter to come out fearlessly: "Your vote is your voice, and your choice must be respected."
Davido currently serves as Chairman of the Imole Youth Mobilisation Committee for Governor Adeleke's re-election bid — Adeleke is his uncle. He has openly backed his uncle's candidacy while framing this particular appearance around peace and process rather than partisan attack.
Whatever side of Osun politics you stand on, the call for a peaceful, credible election on August 15 is one every well-meaning Nigerian should echo.
