Here Norah speaks to the Scotland + Venice partnership and its impact, as well as Bugarin + Castle’s work with Manila-based band Kayle Teresa, who worked with the artists on the soundtrack for the film Submit to Sound with the support of British Council’s Connections Through Culture.

British Council Scotland are part of the Partnership for the Scotland + Venice project. Founded in 2003, the project supports the development of new work, fosters international connections and exchange, and positions Scotland as a vibrant place for creative and cultural production.

In a new partnership between Scotland + Venice and The Skinny, we are introducing the Emerging Writers in Venice opportunity for selected participants from the Professional Development Programme.

During their time with Shame Parade, Senior Exhibition Associate Lily Lavorato and Exhibition Associates Samuel Riddy, Annabelle Crowner and Bessie Schofield will share ideas and write an article that draws inspiration from their time in Venice.

Each writer will receive editorial support from The Skinny’s Art Editor Rachel Ashenden, these articles will go live on The Skinny’s online platform.

Beth Primrose, an Exhibition Associate from Edinburgh College as part of Scotland + Venice’s Professional Development Programme, hosted a writing workshop during their time spent in Venice, with participants from projects across the Biennale.

“As someone interested in other people’s voices and highlighting the collective narrative it was such a pleasure to host this session. Black out poetry, discussion, virtual cut-ups, personal and sensory poetry was such a beautiful way to activate and explore Bulgarin + Castle’s Shame Parade in more depth.” - Beth Primrose.

In reading, rewriting and reclaiming texts, ideas and emotions the group created their own artworks, which they generously contributed towards a collection that Beth plans to develop as an artist’ s book.

During their filmed interview in Venice, Bugarin + Castle talk us through the layers of Shame Parade.

Nocturnal Amusements is a new sculpture that has no singular viewpoint in the space; and features a detailed diorama that firstly can be viewed through peering through the optical illusion and then again from the other side of the sculpture. The diorama features various visual references to Hogarth’s work and the Manila North Cemetery in the Philippines, where a section of the penal code continues to ban loud noise after 10pm.

“At the end of the optical illusion within this sculpture we see the Hogarth print reference around charivari. When the audience comes to the other side of the sculpture, they see the Manila North Cemetery where karaoke and life is mixed upon the sound restrictions which have sort of collided into that space via histories.” - Angel Cohn Castle.

Bugarin + Castle's Shame Parade, curated by Mount Stuart, is a multi-layered exhibition that uses the concept of the parade as a lens to explore complex emotional legacies of shame, sound and voice.

This short film welcomes you into their practice and Scotland + Venice, with insight into the production and preparation for the opening of Shame Parade, hearing from the artists and curator as well as voices from across the project. It starts during production in Glasgow at the studio, visits the Isle of Bute during the Professional Development Programme training at Mount Stuart and concludes at the exhibition just ahead of the public opening in Venice.
