LEARNING FROM THE PAST
U.S. Army senior noncommissioned officers assigned to 207th Military Intelligence Brigade - Theater toured Forte Biondella in the summer of 2025, Verona, Italy. The Austrian fort was built in 1838 and was historically a defensive position for the city. Massimo Beccati, a retired Alpini Soldier with ties to the 207th MIB(T), guided the NCOs through the Carlo Ederle Gold Medal Foundation and the World War I museum housed in the fort. Several exhibits belonged to Carlo Ederle, the highly decorated WWI Italian Army officer which Caserma Ederl e is named after.

At Caserma Matteo Miotto, the 207th Military Intelligence Brigade - Theater, is doing more than restoring operations—they’re helping restore the environment. Partnering with Italian entomologists, the brigade supported the careful relocation of bee colonies, honoring both ecological responsibility and host-nation partnerships. These tiny pollinators play a big role in sustaining our ecosystems—and their safe transfer reflects our commitment to stewardship, unity, and shared values across borders.

Preserving beehives is typically not a U.S. Army mission – but in the Vicenza Military Community it’s an environmental obligation and a nod to community relations. Taking care of bee colonies is not only a conscious duty, it is a lawful order here in Italy.

Bees are vital to the environment, said Davide Doná, an entomologist at Directorate of Public Works on U.S. Army Garrison Italy,

“Mamma mia,” said Doná, “Einstein said ‘without bees, humans would only have four years of life left.’”

Last month, the 207th Military Intelligence Brigade – Theater held a change-of-command ceremony at Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy. COL Stephen Skells relinquished command of the Lightning Brigade to COL Steven Lacy after two years of dedicated leadership.

“To our Soldiers, you inspire me every day and I’m honored to have worked with you,” said COL Skells. “The Soldiers and leaders you see before you have striven for excellence, exemplified the American spirit, and remind us of what service to our nation at high caliber looks like.”

In his first remarks as incoming commander, COL Lacy emphasized the importance of selfless service:

“While many of our countrymen are at home focused on recreation or personal pursuits, you stand for something greater. You are the fabric that keeps our republic together.”
