Many people know our Parish as **St Laurent**, but have you ever wondered who Saint Laurent was? 🤔
Saint Laurent is the French name for **Saint Lawrence**, one of the most famous Christian martyrs of the 3rd century. He lived in Rome and served as a deacon of the Church under Pope Sixtus II. Tradition tells us that Lawrence was responsible for caring for the poor and distributing aid to those in need.
In AD 258, during a period of persecution of Christians by the Roman Emperor Valerian, Lawrence was arrested and asked to hand over the treasures of the Church. Instead, he presented the poor and vulnerable people he had been helping, saying that they were the Church’s true treasure. He was subsequently martyred and has been remembered ever since for his faith, courage and compassion.
Saint Lawrence became widely honoured across Europe during the Middle Ages, and many churches and parishes were dedicated to him, including our own Parish of **St Laurent** here in Jersey. The Parish Church, which has stood at the heart of our community for centuries, continues that long tradition of dedication to Saint Lawrence.
His feast day is celebrated on **10 August**, and he is often regarded as a patron saint of the poor, of charitable work and of service to others.
As we reflect on the history of our Parish, it is wonderful to remember that the name **St Laurent** connects our community to a story that is over 1,700 years old a story of generosity, service and care for others that still has meaning today. 💛
