Yesterday at Government House The King's Baton Relay was officially launched.

The traditional relay, which travels from Buckingham Palace around the world to the opening ceremony, has been given a revamp.

Instead of featuring a single baton, each of the 74 nations and territories taking part has personalised its own baton with a design that showcases its culture and values. They will all come together at the Glasgow opening ceremony on 23 July.

Jersey's baton has been designed by local artist Nicholas Romeril and features Jersey cows, Jersey lilies and coastal scenery.

His Excellency said:

"All 74 nations and territories who are competing in the Commonwealth Games have been asked to design their own baton, so the one we've seen today represents Jersey in so many ways with the castle and the Jersey cows on it, so really lovely!

"I think it represents how the King sees the Commonwealth, which is bringing people together. The diversity across the world of these 74 nations, it's a unique thing, it's brilliant."

Jersey is sending a 21-strong team to Glasgow to compete in swimming, athletics, judo and bowls.
