🌒☀️ Planning to watch the solar eclipse this Wednesday?

A partial solar eclipse will be visible on Wednesday 12th August, and if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse, please make sure you do so safely. 👀

⚠️ Never look directly at the Sun. Even during an eclipse, looking directly at the Sun can cause serious and potentially permanent damage to your eyes — and the damage may occur without causing any immediate pain.

😎 Normal sunglasses are NOT safe for viewing an eclipse, no matter how dark they are.

If you’re planning to watch:

🔭 Use genuine eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.

🔎 Check eclipse glasses before use and do not use them if they are scratched, torn or damaged.

📦 Alternatively, watch indirectly using a pinhole projector or another safe projection method.

👧 Make sure children are closely supervised when viewing the eclipse and understand that they should never look directly at the Sun.

🌒 It should be a spectacular sight — enjoy it, but protect your eyes while you do!

❗Please give us as much notice as possible if you need to cancel your Patient Transport Service booking.

Our Patient Transport Service helps hundreds of patients travel to essential hospital appointments and day services across the island every week.

Unfortunately, when transport bookings are cancelled at short notice, it is often too late for us to offer that journey to another patient. This means valuable transport capacity can go unused while other patients are waiting for assistance.

So far this year, more than 1334 bookings have been cancelled at short notice - the equivalent of 3 weeks of Patient Transport Service capacity.

If your circumstances change and you no longer need transport, please let us know as soon as possible. Giving us as much notice as you can helps us make the best use of our crews and vehicles and allows us to support more patients who rely on the service.

If you need to cancel your transport:

✅ Please contact the Patient Transport Service Control Room on 444750 to cancel your transport booking

Today, we celebrate the dedication, professionalism and compassion of paramedics in Jersey and around the world.

Every day, our teams respond to people at some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Whether delivering urgent emergency care, supporting patients in the community, or providing reassurance when it is needed most, their commitment to helping others makes a real difference.

While this day is dedicated to paramedics, we also want to take the opportunity to recognise the wider ambulance service team.

This includes out Patient Transport Service colleagues who support patients to and from appointments and treatments to providing reassurance and compassion along the way, our PTS team plays a vital role in caring for our island community.

Thank you to our paramedics, PTS colleagues and everyone across the States of Jersey Ambulance Service for the difference you make every day.

Heatwave Safety Advice for Islanders

Temperatures are going to be very high for the next couple of days. During this heatwave, please take extra care and look out for those who may be more vulnerable—especially elderly neighbours, friends, and relatives.

☀️To beat the heat, follow these simple steps:
- Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and when UV levels are highest
- Take cool baths or showers
- Drink plenty of water; avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Keep your home cool: close curtains, open windows, and use fans
- Wear light, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
- Apply sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) before going outside

🎓 Schools Information
- Decisions on school opening hours or adjustments to the school day are taken by individual headteachers, who will communicate directly with parents.
- Please check your email and the school’s social media channels for updates.

🔥 Fire Safety Reminders
- Use BBQs responsibly – don’t use them on balconies
- Never put hot disposable BBQs in bins – allow them to cool completely
- Do not light bonfires—there is an increased risk of land fires
- Dispose of glass carefully - it can start fires in dry conditions

🌊 Beach and Sea Safety
- Always check tide times before swimming
- Be aware of currents and swell
- Choose beaches with RNLI lifeguard patrols where possible
