Following changes to the Regulation of Care (Jersey) Law 2014, the Jersey Care Commission is expanding its remit to include the independent regulation of hospital services, ambulance services and Government-provided mental health services.

Our Chief Inspector, Rebecca Sherrington shared an overview in the latest editions of Jersey's parish magazines, answering some of the key questions about what these changes mean for Islanders, the purpose of modern independent regulation and what people can expect as the newly regulated services begin the inspection process.

Congratulations to our Regulation Officer, Catia Magalhaes , on completing the International Regulatory Course with Erasmus University, Rotterdam, alongside colleagues Andy Kean and Lesley Callander.

Balancing work, family life and professional study is no small achievement, and we are incredibly proud of our team’s commitment to continual learning and professional development.

The expertise and experience of our team are at the heart of effective regulation, helping us deliver independent oversight that supports safe, high-quality care for Islanders. Opportunities to collaborate and share learning with Regulators from other jurisdictions also help ensure our approach continues to be informed by international best practice and emerging thinking across the care sector.

The voices of care users and their families play an vital role in shaping how care is regulated in Jersey.

Earlier this year, following public consultation and feedback from across the care sector, we published updated Adult Social Care Standards. The changes helped ensure the standards continue to reflect lived experience, best practice and the expectations of Islanders who rely on care services.

Chief Inspector Rebecca Sherrington and care user Trudy Robinson discuss why the Adult Social Care Standards matter, how the experiences of care users help shape them, and the important role they play in helping people understand what they should expect from care services.
