The Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Senator Helen Miles, is continuing to press for action to address travel difficulties experienced by some Islanders since the introduction of the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. Senator Miles has written to airline carriers and consular representatives seeking their assistance to ensure passengers with legitimate immigration permissions issued by Jersey are not wrongly prevented from travelling.

Islanders who are due to travel are reminded to have relevant documents with them, if they have them, as they’re valid for travel. These include:

✅ Visa vignette or,
✅ Work permit or,
✅ Supporting official documents (including EUSS letters)

Operation Mink is a Jersey Customs & Immigration Service, JCIS, investigation into a Jersey-based syndicate involved in importing co***ne into the Island.

As a result of the operation, 55-year-old Venezuelan national Mariela Gomez Marquez has been found guilty, following a four-day trial in the Royal Court, of laundering the cash proceeds of her son's drug trafficking activities.

British and Irish citizens who hold dual nationality must be able to prove that they are a British or Irish citizen when they enter the Common Travel Area (UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man) – the only practical way to do this is by showing a British or Irish passport.

Since 25 February 2026, anyone who is not a British or Irish citizen, or who has EU settled status, will require either a Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorities (ETA) to enter the Common Travel Area.

You do not need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if you are a British or Irish citizen, hold a valid UK Visa, or have permission to live, work, or study in the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man (including anyone with settled or pre-settled status).

With the busy summer holiday travel season underway, we want journeys to be as smooth as possible for Jersey residents.

Non-British and non-Irish Jersey residents with valid immigration permissions from the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service do not need an ETA to travel back to Jersey.

A small number of non-British and non-Irish Jersey residents have been wrongly denied boarding when returning, despite holding valid documents for travel.

This has occurred because some airlines and ground handlers have misinterpreted ETA requirements or experienced difficulties verifying Jersey issued permissions within their systems.

Before you travel:
If they apply to you, make sure you’ve got these documents with you. They’re valid for travel.
✅ Visa vignette or,
✅ Work permit or,
✅ Supporting official documents (including EUSS letters)

Please be aware that there is now a duty‑free allowance for v**e liquid (e-liquid). Travellers may bring up to 50 ml of e‑liquid into Jersey free of duty. This applies to all e‑liquid, whether or not it contains ni****ne *.

Any quantity above the 50 ml allowance is now liable to duty on arrival.

On 17 June, border police and customs officers from Normandy and Brittany travelled to Jersey, led by the Sub Prefect of St Malo Mr Jean-Bernard Iché, for the annual meeting with Guernsey and Jersey counterparts.

The teams discussed the future regulations and new regulations coming in force in the respective territories and attended the presentation of the Port of St Helier's development projects. They also met with the French honorary Consul Pierre Chays.

This annual meeting helps to maintain good operational communication between the respective teams.
