On Armed Forces Day, we're proud to celebrate our very own James Shales.

James began his military journey in the Cadets before transferring into the Army, where he trained as an engineer and served in locations across the world including Afghanistan, Belize, Romania and Africa.

Today, James leads our Tool Department at Romerils while continuing to serve part-time in the Army. The engineering skills, problem-solving abilities and discipline he developed through his military career are invaluable both in his role at Romerils and in his ongoing service.

Coming from a family with a strong connection to the Armed Forces, service has always been part of James's story. His dedication, commitment and wealth of experience make him a valued member of both the Romerils team and the wider Armed Forces community.

The Jersey Field Squadron RE (M) are always proud of our Officers and Soldiers who find time to balance family, work and Reserve Service.
Well done Paul.

24th June is Reserves Day, a special day to honour the men and women who serve as Reservists in their spare time in the British Armed Forces.

You may recognise our postie Paul from bike deliveries in St Clement – but after he’s completed his postal duties, he’s Lance Corporal Insley of the Jersey Field Squadron, Royal Engineers Militia, part of the Royal Monmouthshire regiment of the Royal Engineers.

In this role, he is a driver – using land rovers to move small amounts of troops and kit quickly and efficiently across all terrains, and (up to) 15 ton military trucks – as well as the Squadron Chef, keeping all the hard-working men and women fed during training weekends.

He trains once a week with the Squadron, plus one weekend a month, and a two week training camp once a year.

We’re looking forward to this year’s Armed Forces Day! 💂🏻‍♂️⚔️🇬🇧🇯🇪

We are proud to announce that the Jersey Field Squadron (Royal Engineers) will be taking part in this year’s Armed Forces Day celebrations in St Helier on Saturday 27 June.

As Jersey’s only military unit, the Squadron carries a proud heritage that stretches back centuries. Its roots can be traced to the old Jersey Militia, whose members played a crucial role in defending the Island during the Battle of Jersey in 1781. On that historic day, local forces stood firm to repel a French invasion, cementing a legacy of courage and service that continues today.

Through its connection to the Corps of Royal Engineers, the Squadron shares in a distinguished record of service across major conflicts including both World Wars, as well as more recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Royal Engineers have been at the forefront of modern military operations — providing combat engineering, route clearance, bomb disposal, bridge building, infrastructure construction and humanitarian support in some of the most challenging environments around the world.

Today, the Jersey Field Squadron continues that vital role. As Army Reservists, its members balance civilian careers with military training and operational readiness. They provide specialist engineering support to the British Army and stand ready to assist the Island in times of emergency, offering resilience and community support when needed.

Armed Forces Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this remarkable legacy and to recognise the service and sacrifice of all those who serve and have served.

Another brilliant Battle of Jersey Dinner, commemorating the Royal Militia of the Island of Jersey Battle Honours! Thanks to all those who organised it, to the guests, the story tellers, the band, the caterers, and all other supporters of the Squadron!

Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Jersey where a British and Jersey force defeated the invading French forces. The Squadron has the honour of maintaining the Jersey Militias legacy and Battle Honours so will be commemorating the battle at our annual dinner this weekend.
