Jersey has beautiful beaches which should be enjoyed by Islanders. Conscientious campers should not be disallowed from staying overnight. A booking system would help bolster this.

On Friday 31 July, the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel met for the first time and discussed their priorities for the coming months.

The Panel will be scrutinising the work of the Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, the Minister for External Relations and the Minister for International Development.

The Panel identified several initial areas of interest for further exploration and ongoing monitoring, including freight costs and logistics, local procurement, artificial intelligence and its impact on the economy, data protection and GDPR, competition and costs in the consumer and SME banking and finance market and the economic opportunities presented by the development of a pharmaceutical framework.

The Panel recognised that the Common Strategic Priorities have yet to be announced and is keen to ensure its work supports and complements these. It acknowledged that work is already underway in some of these areas and is therefore gathering further information to avoid duplication and identify where Scrutiny can add the greatest value.

The Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Deputy Karen Wilson, is seeking applications from Islanders interested in serving on the committee as voluntary non-elected members. This is a rare opportunity to play a significant role in scrutinising how taxpayers’ money is being spent.

The role is particularly suited to senior professionals from a range of backgrounds, including corporate governance, information technology, finance, human resources, regulation, law, and the third sector.

The petition: ‘Install PFAS-removal water and air filters in schools and public buildings’ has received a Ministerial response:

'Jersey’s mains water is safe, with PFAS levels below UK/EU guidelines. As schools and public buildings use the same monitored supply, PFAS air or water filtration is not considered necessary…'
