🚨Tasking Report:🚨

At approximately 21:02 on 7 August, JLA was tasked to a reported 14 foot speedboat which had lost propulsion after losing a propeller.

The Jersey Lifeboat Association’s inshore lifeboat, Albert Pinel, launched at 21:20 and proceeded towards the Havre des Pas area.

The casualty vessel was located close to the rock known as the Mondine.

On arrival, the crew of the Albert Pinel, found the casualty vessel with no lights and three occupants on board.

The vessel also had no working VHF radio, with communication having to be maintained by mobile phone.

A tow was quickly established and the vessel was brought safely back to St Helier Harbour, where it was brought alongside the pontoon.

The JLA would like to remind everyone heading out on the water of the importance of carrying appropriate safety equipment and, importantly, ensuring that it is in good working condition before setting out.

A working VHF radio, navigation lights when operating at night, and suitable lifejackets for everyone on board are amongst the basic safety equipment that can make a significant difference when something goes wrong at sea.

Incident De-Brief – Sunday 2nd August

📟 LAUNCH – INSHORE LIFEBOAT 📟

At 21:11 on Sunday evening, Jersey Coastguard paged our volunteer crew requesting the immediate launch of Albert Pinel in response to multiple incidents in St Ouen’s Bay.

The most critical report concerned a person who had entered the water near the Watersplash after dark and was last seen drifting north in the fading light. A second incident involved reports of people at Rocco Tower who were possibly cut off by the tide, with one additional person also believed to be in the water.

Shortly before 21:24, with a volunteer crew of four on board, Albert Pinel slipped her berth and proceeded west at best speed. While departing the harbour, updated information confirmed that the incident at the Watersplash had been resolved and the casualty was safely ashore, allowing the crew to focus their attention on the ongoing incident at Rocco Tower.

Arriving on scene just nine minutes later, Albert Pinel assisted Jersey Fire & Rescue who had arrived shortly beforehand. The lifeboat was subsequently stood down once the situation had been resolved. No further information is available regarding this incident.

Albert Pinel returned to St Helier, arriving back alongside at 22:45, where she was washed down, refuelled, and made ready for service once again.

Incident De-brief – Saturday 1st August

📟 LAUNCH INSHORE LIFEBOAT📟

At 18:21 Saturday evening (1st August), Jersey Coastguard requested the immediate launch of Albert Pinel in response to a late arrival of a swimmer in the West Park area.

At 18:38, with a volunteer crew of four onboard, Albert Pinel slipped her berth and proceeded outbound. However, whilst exiting the harbour, the ILB received a new tasking from Jersey Coastguard to a separate incident after a commercial passenger vessel, Tarifa Jet, returning from St Malo had a passenger aboard who had become unconscious and needed immediate assistance. Albert Pinel quickly responded and proceeded with haste to the new tasking south east of Demi de Pas where the Tarifa Jet was located. Whilst approaching the location Jersey Coastguard contacted the Albert Pinel to stand her down as the casualty aboard had recovered consciousness. Albert Pinel stood by and confirmed that the passenger did not need further assistance and turned round to proceed back to St Helier.

It was undoubtedly an extremely busy period for Jersey Coastguard, with separate incidents occurring in quick succession. Sunday evening, our crew mobilised alongside fellow search and rescue partners who were launched but subsequently stood down, a good all round team effort!

With Albert Pinel washed down, refuelled and made ready for service once again, it was finally home time for our volunteer crew to enjoy the remainder of the evening.

📟 INSHORE LIFEBOAT📟 Tasking whilst on Exercise

At 19:14 Tuesday evening (Tuesday 27th July), Jersey Coastguard requested the tasking of Albert Pinel during its usual Tuesday training exercise in response to a kayak which had been found upside down in a cave in Portelet.

With the crew of four already aboard conducting training the Albert Pinel paused the training exercise to proceed to the location. Once the Albert Pinel was on scene a thorough shorline search of the area from Quaisne point to Noirmont point was carried out by the crew. This task had been reported earlier by a fisherman who was unable get to the Kayak concerned. Once searches were completed by the crew and the kayak recovered Jersey Coastguard was happy that all avenues were covered and the Albert Albert Pinel was stood down at 19:38

The ILB proceeded out of tasking to continue on with their training plan.

The incident was subsequently classified as a call with good intent the lifeboat was stood down and returned to training.

It was undoubtedly a worthy call to confirm the situation was not anything more serious which Jersey Coastguard act upon in all occasions like this.

With Albert Pinel washed down, refuelled and made ready for service once again after their completed training plan, it was finally home time for our volunteer crew.

Incident De-brief – Sunday 26th July

📟 LAUNCH INSHORE LIFEBOAT📟

At 20:10 yesterday evening (Sunday 26th July), Jersey Coastguard requested the immediate launch of Albert Pinel in response to a multi-agency incident at Greve de Lecq.

At 20:24, with a volunteer crew of four onboard, Albert Pinel, slipped her berth and proceeded outbound. However, whilst exiting the harbour, the ILB received a new tasking to a separate incident after a member of the public called Jersey Coastguard to report a vessel displaying a flashing light that appeared to be in difficulty between Havre des Pas and Grève d’Azette.

The ILB proceeded at best speed in breezy conditions, making the short passage around the southern end of the reclamation site before approaching the Havre des Pas area. Working closely with Jersey Coastguard, it was established that the reported light had already been passed by the lifeboat. Following further vectoring, it became evident that the flashing light was in fact sunlight reflecting from the solar panels mounted on a data buoy in the area.

The incident was subsequently classified as a call with good intent and, with the initial incident at Greve de Lecq also having been safely resolved, the lifeboat was stood down and returned to station.

It was undoubtedly an extremely busy period for Jersey Coastguard, with multiple incidents occurring in quick succession. This evening our crew mobilised alongside fellow search and rescue partners from St Catherine’s RNLI, Jersey Fire & Rescue, States of Jersey Police and Drone Rescue, a real team effort!

With Albert Pinel washed down, refuelled and made ready for service once again, it was finally home time for our volunteer crew to enjoy the remainder of the weekend.

Welcome back to Episode 2 of Training Tuesday, where we give you a behind-the-scenes look at the wide range of training our volunteer crews undertake twice a week to ensure they’re always ready to respond.

This week, we’re joining our ILB crew aboard Albert Pinel as they take part in a scenario-based exercise alongside the commercial operators at Go-Sail.je

Safely transferring crew and equipment at sea is a vital skill when responding to casualties or vessels in distress. It demands clear communication, continuous dynamic risk assessment, and precise boat handling in what can often be challenging conditions.

During this exercise, the crew practised transferring a CAS Care-trained crew member, along with specialist medical equipment, from Albert Pinel to a sailing vessel to carry out a simulated casualty assessment.

🚑 Did you know?
Albert Pinel carries a comprehensive range of medical equipment, all of which our crews are trained to use through an intensive five-day Casualty Care course, followed by regular refresher training. This equipment includes oxygen, pain relief, a defibrillator, patient monitoring equipment, and much more.

Combined with our dedicated casualty care cards, this allows our crews to provide treatment for everything from seasickness and minor injuries to life-threatening medical emergencies until advanced care can be accessed ashore.

After some award-worthy acting from the sailors (and plenty of laughs along the way!), the casualty care team safely transferred back aboard Albert Pinel before continuing with the rest of the evening’s training.

When Ian's not at the helm of Albert Pinel, he's working at Jersey Electricity, where he's spent 38 years as a time-served electrician designing heating and water systems - from air-to-water heat pumps and smart panel heating to EV chargers and solar PV, helping the island work towards its 2050 zero carbon policy.

In his free time he enjoys fishing, whether from the shore or out on his own boat.
