This evening, Jersey Fire and Rescue Service received a report of a Carbon Monoxide alarm sounding on a Sailing Yacht in the St Helier Marina.
It soon transpired on arrival that the crew on board had potentially suffered from the early onset of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, in the form of headaches, on their voyage from overseas.
Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer. It is odourless and can come from various sources. It can be fatal.
The most common symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning are headache, dizziness, upset stomach and vomiting.
Crew Commander Brown would like to remind Mariners:
“If travelling on your boat this summer, be aware of the causes of Carbon Monoxide, as this could be yourself in this situation.
- Cook in a well ventilated area.
- Ensure your cabin area is not affected by engine fumes.
- Ensure any electrical components, including batteries, are functioning correctly and not damaged when charging.“
