Please don't be alarmed if you see small amounts of smoke in the area!

This training and input is vitally important as we face this extreme heat and dry weather, where there is greater chance for wildfires to occur.

We're currently attending a grass fire in the area of La Collette, and the incident is now under control.

Three fire engines and a water carrier are on scene.

Islanders are asked to avoid the area and if you live in the vicinity, please keep doors and windows closed.

Islanders are being thanked for playing their part in helping us to ensure that wildfires donā€™t have to be tackled in the island.

How you can help:
āœ… If you are barbequing, please donā€™t do so anywhere near vegetation
āœ… Always to ensure coals and ashes are fully extinguished and fully cooled, along with the sand beneath.
āœ… Never dispose of hot ashes in bins.

šŸš­ Donā€™t smoke or put ci******es out in dry areas, or leave glass there.
šŸ”„ Bonfires and burning off in rural locations, with the potential for spread is risky when itā€™s so dry. Hot, dry, weather means grass, shrubs and vegetation can ignite very easily.

A single spark can quickly develop into a significant fire, placing pressure on emergency services and threatening property, wildlife and the environment.

The featured photos of a fire at L'Etacq in 2009 show just how quickly a headland fire can take hold and the significant damage it can cause, even in a small area.

This week, our On-Call Firefighters have been training alongside colleagues from the States of Jersey Ambulance Service, developing their skills in casualty care and casualty extrication.

The training included the use of a range of specialist equipment, including stretchers and bariatric patient handling equipment, as well as emergency care and first aid techniques.

Multi-agency training is an important part of ensuring our emergency services can work together effectively to provide the best possible care for islanders when it matters most.

A big thank you to Sarah, Specialist Paramedic, for her support and expertise during the training.

Our On-Call Firefighters have a varied role within the community, and opportunities such as this help maintain and enhance their skills across a wide range of incident types.

A group of firefighters from Jerseyā€™s Fire Service are taking on a challenge with a difference this summer holiday in aid of a touching appeal ā€“ with their children.

The planned ā€œDads, Lads and Lasses Scottish Adventureā€ will feature an intrepid group of young people (and their fire fighter dads) scaling Ben Nevis ā€“ the highest peak in the UK ā€“ on 14 August.

The fundraising is, in part, in aid of The Loweā€™s Legacy Fund, which was set up in memory of father and son Dean and Charlie Lowe, who died tragically in Jersey in the summer of 2023, while the other 50 per cent will be donated to Fire Fighters Charity, which supports firefighters across the UK, as well as in the Channel Islands.

Firefighter Richard Wilsonā€™s twin sons, Charlie and Archie, were at school with Charlie Lowe. Now aged 14, the boys were keen to do something in Charlieā€™s memory.

The full line up of firefighters and their children taking part is:

Graeme Stokes (with his son and daughter)

Adding his support, Chief Fire Officer Paul Brown said: ā€œThis fundraising challenge by Richard, Marcin, Andrew and Graeme and their sons and daughters is a brilliant example of so many things. Itā€™s a physical challenge, but the motivation and intent mark it out as special. The Loweā€™s Legacy Fund and the Firefighters Charity are incredibly worthy and, of course, there are important connections to respect. We know ā€˜the Dadsā€™, of course, and so it comes as no surprise that their children are adventurous and selfless. The idea is all theirs, and the achievement will be too. Iā€™m just proud the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is associated with them, and we wish them all well.ā€

Incident - Two Paddleboarders Rescued Near La Rocque Harbour

At approximately 5:40pm this evening, the Fire Service was alerted by the Coastguard through the Emergency Services Control Centre to two people in difficulty on a paddleboard near La Rocque Harbour.

Fire crews immediately responded with their Inshore Rescue Boat and Shoreline Rescue team. Following an assessment on arrival, it was determined that Seymour Slip was the most suitable location to launch the rescue boat.

At the same time, rescue swimmers entered the water and made contact with the two casualties, who had taken safe refuge on rocks approximately 200 metres offshore while awaiting assistance. One male and one female were safely brought back to shore to waiting Paramedics who assessed both casualties, that were found to be safe and well.

SJFRS would like to remind anyone planning to head out onto the water to ensure their equipment is in good condition, always wear a suitable life jacket or buoyancy aid, and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

We would also like to commend the two paddleboarders for making the sensible decision to seek safe refuge and remain in place until rescue crews arrived, helping to ensure a safe outcome.

We are proud to support World Drowning Prevention Day.

This is a global awareness day held on 25 July, to highlight the dangers of water and give life-saving advice.

An estimated 236,000 people drown every year worldwide, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5 to 14 years.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, remember to ā€˜Float to Liveā€™:

tilt your head back with your ears submerged
relax and breathe normally
move your hands to help stay afloat
spread your arms and legs out
once you are able to, call for help or swim to safety

If you are visiting the beach this summer, swim at lifeguarded beaches and between the yellow and red flags.

We would like to highlight the work of our firefighter colleagues in Sark and Guernsey, following significant fires in both islands over the weekend ā€“ and remind islanders to stay vigilant as the hot, dry weather continues.

In Little Sark, a major gorse fire on Friday covered around 20,000 square metres and was declared a major incident ā€“ the first in 70 years. Nine firefighters from Guernsey supported Sarkā€™s crews, and some were injured while responding. We wish them a speedy recovery.

On Sunday, Guernsey crews also tackled a wildfire at La CorbiĆØre, battling strong winds. Meanwhile in Portbailā€‘surā€‘Mer in France, a fastā€‘moving fire led to around 50 people being evacuated.

Although there were no major fires in Jersey, we received around 30 calls about smoke visible across the island, caused by the Portbailā€‘surā€‘Mer fire. Crews checked multiple locations, supported by Jersey Coastguard and Channel Islands Air Search, who carried out an overflight to confirm there was no fire here.

Jerseyā€™s Chief Fire Officer Paul Brown said: ā€œWe thank all colleagues in Jerseyā€™s Emergency Planning Unit and partners across government, private and third sectors for their continued work during the heatwave, including support from Jersey Met Office, who supply the detailed Fire Severity Index.

We thank islanders for their continued vigilance. If you see fire, call 999 immediately.ā€
