Today, I joined the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation in receiving JMD $4.5 Million in proceeds following the inaugural Run for Mom 5K held to raise funds for adolescent mothers, maternal and child health.

Spearheaded by Dr. Lorren Scott of The Heart and Vascular Centre, Scotiabank and other partners, this support will assist young mothers enrolled in the Programme for Adolescent Mothers, including those reintegrated into secondary schools and pursuing tertiary studies, helping to cover basic needs as they continue their education.

Special thanks to all participants and the Tivoli Gardens community for supporting this important initiative and helping to create a brighter future for young mothers and their children.

Grange announces celebration for Ernie Smith

Kingston, 29 May 2026 – The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, says a Celebration of Life for the late Jamaican singer Ernie Smith will be held next week Friday, June 5, 2026.

Minister Grange describes the event as “an evening of music, memories and celebration”.

It will take place at Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre beginning at 6pm.

Ernie Smith, an icon of Reggae music, passed away last month in the United States after a period of illness.

Minister Grange says the Celebration of Life next week will “highlight and honour Ernie Smith’s contribution to Jamaican music”.

Among his most memorable recordings are ‘Life is Just For Living’, ‘Duppy Gunman’, ‘Pitta Patta’, and ‘I For Jesus’.

I am encouraged by this year’s staging of the National Primary School Track and Field Championship. The Central region has increased its participation to 190 athletes while the Eastern region by 595 athletes. This is a clear reflection of the programme’s expansion and its deepening reach within our communities. Islandwide 128 schools have entered the championship, bringing in 6,154 young athletes to the regional meets and more than 2,000 earning their place at the National Finals to vie for the championship trophy.

These numbers tell a powerful story, it says Jamaica’s love for track and field is not only alive but continues to expand across the island.

It is important that we acknowledge the pain and disruption caused by Hurricane Melissa. Normal routines were interrupted, and regrettably, some of our usual competitors are unable to join us this season. But we are happy that five new entrants are joining the championship this year, including Black River Prep, which is proudly representing the prep school community.

I commend the coaches, leadership and my word for student athletes is that when you become stars you remember where you are coming from.

My dream for the Primary School Champs is that it grows into an event as large as the ISSA Boys and Girls Champs.

I am pleased to announce increased prize money this year. Six-Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars for first place; $400,000.00 for second; $350, 000.00 for third; and $200,000.00 for fourth place.

The Ministry remains committed to strengthening the pipeline that brings talent from grassroots, to secondary, to clubs and our national programmes. Today we witness the power of grassroots development, the foundation upon which all great athletic success is built.

I wish you safe performances, excellent sportsmanship, and personal bests. May the championship be memorable and a chapter of an extraordinary story.

As part of the Jamaica 60 Legacy Projects, two buildings of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security have now been officially named in honour of two outstanding leaders whose service transformed the lives of Jamaican workers.

Today, we proudly recognize the Lynden Gladstone Newland Building at National Heroes Circle and the Portia Simpson-Miller Building at 1F North Street, tributes to leaders who dedicated their lives to advocating for the working class, strengthening social protection and creating opportunities for generations of Jamaicans.

Their voices were heard, their service was impactful and their legacies continue to stand as reminders that leadership is about uplifting people and creating pathways for a stronger Jamaica. May all who enter these buildings be inspired by their commitment to service and nation-building.
