President of the Senate, Senator Tom Tavares-Finson, made it clear that the decision regarding the tabling of the report was not taken by the Speaker of the House alone, but jointly by the Presiding Officers of Parliament following consultation with the Clerk and legal officers of Parliament.

He also defended Speaker of the House, the Honourable Juliet Holness, against what he described as unfair attacks aimed at undermining her authority and reputation, while emphasizing the importance of respecting both parliamentary procedure and the judicial process.

Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. highlighted that Jamaica’s unemployment rate remains at a historic low of 3.3%, even in the face of recent hurricanes.

Through initiatives including Jamaica Works and the SPIRO programme, the Government is continuing to connect Jamaicans to opportunities in construction, tourism, agriculture, logistics, and manufacturing while modernizing labour market and social protection services for the future.

The Minister was making the remarks during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate.

Efficiency Minister Ambassador Audrey Marks has highlighted the expansion of National ID services across Jamaica, including new enrolment locations in Montego Bay, Portmore, Mandeville, Santa Cruz, May Pen, and Port Antonio.

The Minister also announced that mobile National ID units will begin operating in constituencies islandwide from June 2026, helping to bring government services closer to the people.

Minister Ambassador Marks further outlined plans to integrate the National ID card with driver’s licence services and introduce faster “one visit, one transaction” processing for civil registration documents. The Minister was making her contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the lower house.

Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. announced new scholarships under the restructured Social Investment Intervention Programme (SIP).

The initiative aims to build Jamaica’s human capacity in areas such as special education, behavioral therapy, early stimulation, occupational safety, and social intervention to better support vulnerable Jamaicans and their families.

The Opposition Leader threw a tantrum and walked-out on Tuesday because Parliament has elected to delay tabling a report which is the subject of Supreme Court proceedings.

Parliament has elected to await a decision of the Court.

This is not the first time a report has not been tabled until a determination by the Court.

In respect of the matter of Ian Hayles and the Integrity Commission, there was a six year delay in the tabling of a report as Hayles had brought the matter before the Supreme Court.

The Government of Jamaica has been spending $67 billion from the budget on Hurricane Melissa relief and recovery efforts. This investment is supporting families, restoring critical infrastructure, and rebuilding key sectors which drive our economy.

An additional $1.4 billion in donations from local and international partners is supporting these efforts, particularly in the area of providing housing solutions.
Recovery is ongoing.
