On Labour Day, a meaningful act of service unfolded in downtown Kingston.

The Spectrum Management Authority, Jamaica Constabulary Force, and Jamaica Defence Force came together, setting aside their uniforms and titles for paintbrushes, teamwork, and a shared commitment to our children.

Their focus was simple but powerful: helping to create brighter, more welcoming spaces for basic school students in the inner city.

Because the spaces where children first learn matter.

This Labour Day effort reminded us that building a better Jamaica does not only happen through major reforms. Sometimes, it begins with showing up, giving back, and investing in one school at a time.

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), The University of the West Indies, Mona, cordially invites you to the launch and presentation of findings from the SALISES Public Artificial Intelligence Readiness Study (Jamaica): Opportunities, Gaps, and Priorities.

This study comes at a defining moment for Jamaica. Artificial Intelligence is already reshaping education, work, business, public services, media, security, governance, and everyday life. The central question is no longer whether AI will affect Jamaica, but whether Jamaica will be prepared to shape that transformation in a way that is inclusive, trusted, productive, and developmentally meaningful.

As a leader and policymaker, your presence is especially important. The findings will provide evidence to support decisions on national AI policy, digital inclusion, education and training, workforce readiness, public-sector modernization, SME competitiveness, data protection, misinformation, deepfakes, and responsible AI governance.

The presentation will help answer urgent national questions: Who in Jamaica is ready for AI? Who is at risk of being left behind? What do Jamaicans know, fear, trust, and expect from AI? How can government, business, education, regulators, and development partners respond before the AI divide hardens?

This is not simply a technology event. It is a national development conversation. The choices made now will help determine whether AI becomes a tool for widening opportunity, improving productivity, strengthening resilience, and modernizing institutions, or whether it deepens existing inequalities.

Date: Tuesday, May 12, 2026Time: 9:00 a.m.Venue: Eon Nigel Harris Council Room, Regional Headquarters, The UWI Mona Campus, Kingston 7

Presenter: Dr. Stephen Johnson, Research Fellow, SALISESChair: Professor Lloyd Waller, Director, SALISES

We look forward to welcoming you as we present evidence that can help Jamaica prepare, govern, and lead in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

From monitoring and regulating radio frequencies to enabling seamless connectivity, the SMA’s responsibilities sit at the heart of how we communicate, connect, and innovate every day.

Our presence at OOCUR 2026 highlighted more than participation. It reflected a commitment to regional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the need for harmonised regulatory frameworks across Caribbean states.

As technologies evolve and demands increase, alignment across small island states is not optional, it is essential.

Meet Guy Lester Malone from the British Virgin Islands, CEO of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, sharing why collaboration across the Caribbean is not just important, but necessary.

At the OOCUR 20th Conference, Malone broke down the realities facing small island states, highlighting how limited resources, rapidly evolving technologies, and increasing demand for connectivity make regional partnerships essential.

He emphasised that harmonising regulations across the Caribbean is key to creating more efficient systems, reducing duplication, and enabling stronger, more coordinated responses to industry challenges. From spectrum management to telecommunications policy, alignment allows small states to move forward with greater impact and resilience.

His perspective reinforced a central theme of the conference, that collaboration and regulatory alignment are critical to building a more connected, future-ready Caribbean. 🌐🔥

The Caribbean’s digital future took center stage at CaribNOG 31 Forum.

From strengthening network resilience to advancing collaboration across the region, the conversations focused on one thing. Building a more secure, connected and future-ready Caribbean.

As part of the forum, Spectrum Management Authority’s Managing Director, Dr. Maria Myers-Hamilton, delivered the Women in CaribNOG address, highlighting the critical role of leadership, inclusion and technical capacity in shaping the region’s digital core.

Events like these go beyond discussion. They drive real impact by bringing together regulators, engineers and industry leaders to improve infrastructure, strengthen connectivity and open pathways for more women to lead in ICT.
