Since the Disabilities Act in 2022, Jamaica has made meaningful progress toward a rights-based approach for persons with disabilities. Awareness has grown, legal protections are stronger, and more persons feel empowered.

However, continued enforcement, adequate funding, and accountability are essential to building an inclusive society.

Since the enactment of the Disabilities Act, there have been meaningful improvements, including social programmes, grants, and increased access to education and transportation services.

However, more progress is needed. Reliable public transportation and improved accessibility in public and commercial spaces remain key priorities to ensure full participation for persons with disabilities.

Good intentions alone are not enough. Without systems, inclusion becomes inconsistent and dependent on chance.

True inclusion is built into policies, workflows, communication, and decision-making — with persons with disabilities at the centre.

Accessibility means removing barriers so everyone can participate fully and equitably.

The Disabilities Act has brought progress, including improved accessibility in public spaces and greater public awareness of persons with disabilities.

However, more support is still needed — especially in education, therapy services, and funding for families and entrepreneurs living with disabilities.
