144 priority one schools have been repaired or are almost at completion.

Chairman of the Education Transformation Oversight Committee (ETOC), Dr. Adrian Stokes, gave this update at the committee's quarterly press conference this morning (October 22), with $9.2 billion spent on the rehabilitation efforts.

The "priority one" category refers to schools that were identified as being in the highest need for repairs due to Hurricane Melissa.

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government recognises the emotional and social challenges associated with relocating nearly 100 residents of Cooper's Pen in Trelawny.

PM Holness assured affected residents that their concerns are understood as the Government considers relocation arrangements following court rulings regarding the occupation of the lands.

21/10/2026

Eligible residents of Cooper's Pen will receive relocation grants as part of efforts to facilitate a dignified and seamless relocation process.

Speaking at the K2 Ribbon-Cutting ceremony in Kingston, Dr. Holness urged residents to engage directly with Ministry representatives to obtain accurate information about the process.

The Government will select four communities across the Corporate Area for a pilot programme aimed at relocating persons living along gully banks, particularly those vulnerable to extreme weather events.

Dr. Holness explained that assistance could include the construction of alternative housing facilities or the provision of relocation grants to help affected residents secure safer accommodation.
