Office of the Public Defender

Office of the Public Defender The Official page of the Office of The Public Defender of Jamaica. The Public Defender is an independent Commission of Parliament.

Our vision is to effectively investigate and seek redress for all breaches of constitutional rights, strive to eliminate injustice and promote full citizenship. The key role of the Office of the Public Defender is to investigate the allegations/complaints that are lodged by persons aggrieved by State or Statutory body. This process entails interviewing and collecting documents from the person maki

ng the allegations and putting the points to the State of Statutory body, giving them a reasonable time to respond. At the end of an investigation, the Public Defender may make recommendations to any authority that is involved in the complaint. If the authority does not take effective steps to carry out any of these recommendations, the Public Defender may make a special report to the Parliament. For more information on the role of the Public Defender, including how to make a complaint, visit our website. The Office of the Public Defender … voice for the voiceless
loosening the chains of injustice!

Did you know this?

👍🏾 Yes

👎🏾 No

The Office of the Public Defender is empowered to take the steps necessary to carry out investigations and protect your rights.

True 👍🏾 If a matter has already been decided by the court, we are unable to overturn that decision.🏛️👩🏾‍⚖️

In doing so, it would bypass the court’s authority and undermine the legal system’s structure.
