Labour Day 2026 was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when communities come together in service and solidarity.

Across divisions, councillors, residents, volunteers, staff and community partners joined efforts to improve public spaces, schools, community facilities and infrastructure through meaningful hands-on work.

From start to finish, the day reflected the true spirit of Labour Day, people coming together to build, restore and uplift their communities.

Let’s continue to maintain the spaces we worked together to improve.

The KSAMC team together with UDC Jamaica provided Liberty Hall with a facelift and carried out critical drainage improvement works as part of Labour Day 2026 activities on Africa Day.

Activities included the removal of a grate to facilitate the cleaning of the drain and improve conditions at the entrance of the historic facility, which houses the Marcus Mosiah Garvey Reference Library, Multimedia Museum and Great Hall.

The project also reflected the significance of Africa Day through the preservation and enhancement of a space deeply connected to the legacy of National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the continued celebration of African heritage, history and identity.

Labour Day 2026 activities officially kicked off with transformation works at the St. William Grant Monument in Brandon Hill Square.

Mayor Andrew Swaby, Councillor Chrishina Richards and residents carried out beautification works, repairs to the water catchment tank and installed a storyboard highlighting the life and legacy of St. William Grant, Pan-Africanist, labour and trade union activist born in Brandon Hill.

The project also reflected the significance of Africa Day and St. William Grant’s role as a member of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League.

It further connected with this year’s Africa Day theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” through the restoration of the community water catchment system.

Africa Day reminds us of the enduring cultural and historical ties between Africa and the Caribbean, and the shared values that continue to shape our communities.

Under this year’s theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” we are reminded that access to clean water and safe sanitation is fundamental to public health, environmental sustainability, economic growth, and social equity
