INDECOM notes with serious concern recent public statements by the Minister of National Security and Peace, which dismiss the use of BWCs by police officers during planned operations.

With rising fatal shooting incidents by the police and limited independent evidence in critical moments, the need for transparency is more important than ever.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is aware of a video showing the apparent assault of an elderly man by a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). This serious incident has prompted INDECOM to launch an investigation.

INDECOM is urging those who recorded the original footage to contact them urgently, as this evidence is vital for a thorough and independent inquiry. Information can be submitted via WhatsApp at (876) 553-0000, visiting any INDECOM Regional Office, or calling 876-968-1932/876-968-8875.

The Commission reminds Security Forces that interactions with citizens must demonstrate professionalism and adherence to the law. Use of force should always be lawful and necessary; deviations from these standards damage public trust and ethics.

INDECOM acknowledges JCF's action to put the officer involved on interdiction but stresses that the case remains under independent investigation by INDECOM. The Commission will pursue all inquiries independently, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Complaints about assaults are among the highest reported annually to INDECOM. In recent years, they have also led to numerous charges post-investigation.

INDECOM reiterates its commitment to impartial investigations into all allegations against Security Forces while safeguarding individuals' rights.
