Minister of State, Hon. Franklin Witter, together with FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, René Orellana Halkyer, participated in a tour of farming and fishing communities in St. Elizabeth that were impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

They were accompanied by Ambassador Shorna-Ka Richards, Under-Secretary for Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Her Excellency Marianne Ziss, Ambassador of France to Jamaica; and Gaspard Van Goethem from the Embassy of Belgium.

The tour provided a first-hand look at the devastation caused by the hurricane, while also allowing farmers and fishers to highlight the specific challenges they are experiencing and, together, propose solutions.

The visit comes ahead of the ongoing implementation of USD 50 million “Adapt Jamaica” project, which the Government of Jamaica and the FAO are currently advancing. This project is expected to strengthen Jamaica’s resilience to climate change and enhance food security in the process.

Nearly a week ago, we set the stage for one of the biggest agricultural events in the region, the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA)!

Let’s relive the excitement from the launch of the 20th staging of the CWA, which will be hosted by Jamaica in Trelawny from September 27 to October 2 under the theme: “The New F.A.C.E. of Caribbean Food Systems.”

The CWA will unite regional leaders, farmers, researchers, investors, and development partners in Jamaica to collaborate, tackle challenges, and explore opportunities, all with the goal of building stronger, more resilient Caribbean food systems.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, is currently leading a Jamaican delegation on a strategic mission to China focused on expanding trade, strengthening bilateral cooperation and unlocking new opportunities across the agriculture, fisheries and mining sectors.

Today, the Minister participated in the 2026 Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum, where he joined international leaders and development experts in discussions on inclusive growth, rural development and food security.

As Jamaica continues to Grow Forward, these engagements are helping to position our farmers, fishers and rural communities for greater resilience, stronger markets and expanded economic opportunities. 🇯🇲✨

In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, our coconut growers faced devastating losses, thousands of productive trees and nuts destroyed, leaving shortages and production gaps across Jamaica.

The hardest-hit parishes were St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover, St. James, and Trelawny. Nationwide, an estimated 18,739 trees were lost.

To support recovery, the Ministry, in partnership with the Coconut Industry Board (CIB), distributed a truckload of free coconut seedlings on Friday, May 22 in St. Elizabeth.

This initiative is part of the CIB’s disaster response programme, helping farmers restore production, re-establish groves, and build long-term agricultural resilience.

Together, we are planting hope and strengthening Jamaica’s future.

Happy World Bee Day
Today we celebrate the tiny pollinators that play a huge role in our food security, biodiversity, and environment. Bees help pollinate many of the crops we depend on every day, making them essential to Jamaica’s agricultural futureLet’s work together to protect our bees by planting flowers, reducing harmful chemicals, and preserving natural habitats.
