Bureau of Gender Affairs Jamaica

Bureau of Gender Affairs Jamaica The Bureau of Women's Affairs has been re-named Bureau of Gender Affairs via Cabinet Decision No. 8/16 which was approved on March 21, 2016.

The Bureau of Gender Affairs, division within the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports affirms the government’s decision to develop human capital through gender mainstreaming towards achieving gender equality, equity and social justice. The Bureau of Gender Affairs, a division within the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports (MCGES), is the national machinery respo

nsible for empowering the men and women of Jamaica. This is consistent with Cabinet Decision No. 11/11 and the approval of the National Policy for Gender Equality (NPGE) in 2011. The BGA focuses at the policy level in order to ensure that gender analysis is integrated into all national policies, plans, programmes and projects. This is necessary because development initiatives have a differential impact on women and men.

Highlights from the Challenge to Fathers at the 8th Outstanding Fathers Award Ceremony on Fri. June 19 @ The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel

Introduction & Background

We launched the Outstanding Fathers Awards (OFA) in June 2019. Now in its 8th year, it continued even through COVID because we value fathers’ contributions.

Objectives

1. Highlight the invaluable role, dedication, sacrifice, and leadership of fathers and father figures.

2. Recognize outstanding Jamaican fathers who show commitment, resilience, responsibility, and excellence.

3. Promote positive fatherhood, male engagement, and family wellbeing through role models and active paternal involvement in national development.

2026 Theme

“Built on Strength & Sacrifice: Honouring Resilience & Commitment.”

Event Modality

• Spa Day (pre-event): Relaxation, massages, haircuts, games (e.g., dominoes), networking, smoothies, and healthy treats.

• Main Awards Ceremony: 61 Outstanding Fathers honoured.

Key Messages

• Honouring Fathers will create positive ripple effects on families, communities, and workplaces.

• We aim to shift the narrative away from negative stereotypes of men toward men of distinction who support their families and show respect.

• Men are not perfect, but we support redemption, growth, and becoming the best and highest versions of themselves.

• This year featured strong partnerships, Q&A with prizes (including spa day Day Passes at resorts), family involvement, and networking.

Closing

The event was phenomenal, full of family, resilience, and support.

Even as we recover from Hurricane Melissa, we remain committed to this important work for national development and showing up for each other.
