We received a very high number of applications from Jordan, Palestine, and Syria, making the selection process highly competitive. We look forward to welcoming the selected participants to Amman from 6–17 September 2026.

[ Conference - Energy Across Scales: City, Transition, Region ]

CBRL Amman Institute, in partnership with the French Institute for the Near East (IFPO), the Centre for International Studies (CERI), Sciences Po, and the Arab Centre for Research – Amman, is pleased to invite you to a conference exploring the changing landscapes of energy across the city, transition, and region.

🟨 The conference will address:
• Energy in the urban context: everyday life, populations, and mobility
• Renewable energy and the transition away from fossil fuels
• The political economy of energy and the reshaping of the Arab region
• A discussion on the challenges facing Jordan’s renewable energy sector

The conference brings together researchers, specialists, practitioners, and other stakeholders from Jordan, France, and Lebanon.

As part of CBRL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships in digital heritage, Dr Jane Humphris, CBRL's Director, visited the Hashemite University accompanied by Dr Fatma Marii, Mr Firas Bqa'in, and Eng. Shatha Mubaideen from the CBRL Amman Institute. The visit focused on exploring opportunities for collaboration in research, digital heritage initiatives, and student engagement.

Dr Jane Humphris, Director of the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL), visited the University of Jordan alongside Dr Fatma Marii and Mr Firas Bqa'in from the CBRL Amman Institute to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in scientific research and student training.

The meeting explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration between the University of Jordan and CBRL through joint research initiatives, academic partnerships, and capacity-building opportunities for students.

CBRL looks forward to building on this collaboration and supporting research excellence in Jordan and the wider Levant.

What do Jordan’s Bedouin communities reveal about the role of social media in today’s world? This talk draws on in-depth ethnographic fieldwork to explore how Bedouin have “domesticated” social media to fit their social and cultural realities. It examines how online platforms intersect with key concepts such as tribalism, envy, and mercy, and moves beyond simplistic views of technology to show how social media reflects deeper cultural values and existing political and legal frameworks.

ما الذي تكشفه مجتمعات بدو الأردن حول دور وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي في عالم اليوم؟ تعتمد هذه المحاضرة على عمل ميداني إثنوغرافي معمّق لاستكشاف كيفية “تدجين” البدو لوسائل التواصل الاجتماعي لتتناسب مع واقعهم الاجتماعي والثقافي. كما تناقش كيفية تفاعل المنصات الرقمية مع مفاهيم أساسية مثل القبلية بمفهومها العام وما تحمل من قيم متنوعة، بحيث تتجاوز الرؤى التبسيطية للتكنولوجيا لتُظهر كيف تعكس وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي قيماً ثقافية أعمق وبُنى سياسية وقانونية قائمة.
