Fukui’s 7 traditional crafts: Wakasa Agate Works ♦️

📍 Miketsukuni Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum, Obama City, Fukui Japan

The Wakasa Agate Work craft started approximately 270 years ago during the Edo period, with the production of Agate beads using stones mined in Hokkaido. 📿

Recognized as Japan’s first gemstone craft, Wakasa Agate works evolved from beads to the creation of utensils, jewelry and ornaments like small animal sculptures and sake glasses. In 1976, Wakasa Agate Work was registered as a Japanese Traditional Craft. 🐎🐓🐇✨

While agate stones come in a variety of colors, the artisans of Obama carefully heat them up to give them a reddish hue and enhance their natural transparency, making it the signature look of Wakasa Agate Works. ♦️✨

You can find Wakasa Agate Works in several souvenir shops in Obama City and can even experience the shaping process of this craft through a workshop at the Miketsukuni Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum.

Enjoy a walk through the restored streets of a Japanese medieval city! 🏯

📍 Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins, Fukui City, Fukui Japan

The Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins are the vestiges of a castle town that prospered between 1471 and 1573 and are one of the largest cities from the Sengoku Period excavated in Japan so far. About 278 hectares of the area have been designated as a National Special Historic Site, and 2,343 of the objects found on the site are designated as important cultural properties. 🏯✨

A portion of the town, including artisans and samurai residences has been reconstructed, offering visitors a glimpse of an authentic Japanese medieval city. You can also rent samurai armors kimono and umbrellas for a complete immersion in medieval Japan!

🚲🌸Visit tip: come in April or late November to enjoy the cherry blossoms and fall leaves! You can also rent bicycles near the recreated townscape to explore the area more easily and stretch your excursion to the nearby Ichijo Falls or the Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum.

Discover Fukui’s 7 traditional crafts: Wakasa lacquered chopsticks 🥢

Wakasa lacquered chopsticks have been produced in Obama City for over 400 years. 🥢

Traditionally, the chopsticks are coated in many layers of lacquer and inlaid with several decorative materials, like seashells, gold leaf, pine tree needles, or even eggshells!

The layers of lacquer are then carefully polished off to reveal the decorative elements like embedded gemstones. 🫧🥚🐚✨

Nowadays, it is said that Obama made chopsticks account for about 80% of Japan’s lacquered chopsticks production! 🥢👀

Next time you buy lacquered chopsticks in Japan, check out the label: if they’re Made in Japan, there is a high chance it says they were produced in Fukui!

You’ll find several chopsticks factories with onsite shops across Obama City. Some even offer lacquered chopsticks workshops so that you can make your own chopsticks, like at the Miketsukuni Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum!

Enjoy Japan’s incredible biodiversity in the Nakaikemi Wetland!
📍 Nakaikemi Wetland, Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture
👉 Warning: Littering, harming wildlife and picking up plants, rocks, and animals is strictly prohibited in protected areas.

Located right on the eastern outskirts of Tsuruga City, the Nakaikemi Wetland is a 25ha wide area mixing marshland, forests and hills that has been listed as a protected area under the Ramsar Convention since 2012. 🌎

Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll along wooden paths and observe about 4000 species of plants and animals evolving in their natural habitat. A striking example of this: over 70 species of dragonflies have been observed in the park! The area is also a popular spot for fireflies in June. 🦋✨

The visitor center at the entrance of the park offers further information about the wetland’s biodiversity and maps of the different paths visitors can walk on. Several activities related to nature conservation and farming, like rice planting or management of invasive species, are conducted at certain times of the year. 🌾

Enjoy a peaceful walk along the preserved streets of the Nishi-gumi district in Obama City!

Notice: this is a residential area, please be respectful of the locals and their properties.

With its close connection to Kyoto via the Mackerel Road trade routes and is role in the Kitamae-bune trade, Obama City has long prospered as an active port town. This close connection with the old capital can especially be seen in the traditional streets of Sancho-machi, in the Nishigumi-district of the town, reminiscing of the Gion district in Kyoto.

This neighborhood was once a geisha entertainment district and conserved its traditional architecture, some of the buildings dating back to the Meiji period. The Nishi-gumi District has been registered as Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings

Cafes and small restaurants also line up these streets to enjoy Wakasa’s delicious cuisine while taking a stroll in this quiet time capsule. On weekends and national holidays, you can visit and enjoy guided tours of one of the Houtourou Ryotei, an establishment in activity during the Meiji period.
