A Day Exploring the Classic Fukuoka Destinations Okawa and Yanagawa
In this post, we will introduce one of the ultimate routes for exploring the charming waterway cities of Okawa and Yanagawa.

The first stop is the Chikugo River Vertical Lift Bridge in Okawa, which has been operating since it was constructed in 1935. Aside from witnessing the impressive sight of the iron bridge moving up and down from up close, you can marvel at the scenic panorama, highlighted by the beautiful bridge reflected on the river’s surface.

For lunch, indulge in Yanagawa’s fragrant local specialty: eel seiro mushi (steamed eel).

After strolling through Yanagawa’s retro townscape, it’s time to finish the day with a special summer-limited nighttime event. “Light Boat” will be held until September 30 (Wednesday), during which visitors can enjoy the mystical atmosphere of illuminated river cruises.

Be sure to visit these wonder-filled cities of water!

Anego no Hama – A Mysterious Beach That Sings Beneath Your Feet!
Located in Itoshima City, Anego no Hama is a "singing sand" beach, where the sand makes a curious squeaking sound as visitors walk across it.

This unique sound can only be heard because the beach is kept in exceptionally pristine condition. In fact, the sand once stopped making a sound due to environmental degradation, but thanks to the dedicated cleanup efforts of local residents, its beautiful singing sand has made a remarkable comeback.

The beach’s graceful arc of white sand is also a popular spot for watching the sunset. Visitors can enjoy the mysterious sound beneath their feet while taking in the breathtaking view of the sun sinking over the Genkai Sea.

See 300,000 Red Spider Lilies in Full Bloom During the Miyawaka City Higanbana Festival
Inunaki River Park in Miyawaka City is a lush, relaxing oasis of greenery stretching along the riverbank. With pleasant waterways and well-kept lawns, it is a beloved local spot for leisurely strolls.

The park offers a variety of seasonal flowers throughout the year, but it’s particularly photogenic in mid-to-late September, when its vivid red spider lilies burst into bloom.
At night, a special light-up event illuminates the flowers, making them appear to float in the darkness and creating a mystical atmosphere completely different from the daytime scenery.

Every year, a festival is also held on a Sunday in late September, bringing the grounds to life with stalls serving local specialties and entertaining stage performances.

Here, you can experience Japan’s beautiful nature and warm local festival culture all in one place!

Sakurai Shrine – Grand Architectural Beauty Overflowing with History
Located in Itoshima City, the historic Sakurai Shrine was founded in 1632. Its unique layout preserves the appearance of the shrine as it was at the time of its founding, with the main hall, worship hall, and two-storied gate arranged before an ancient burial mound protected by a shelter.

The main hall is adorned with brilliantly colored, elaborate carvings that vividly reflect the architectural style of the early Edo period. It is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, along with the worship hall and two-storied gate, which were built around the same time.

About one kilometer from the shrine lies Sakurai Futamigaura, which also belongs to the shrine grounds and is home to the famous “Meotoiwa” (Couples Rock). The majestic sight of these two rocks standing side by side in the azure sea is an absolute must-see. Widely known as one of Itoshima’s most scenic spots, Sakurai Futamigaura is well worth adding to a visit to Sakurai Shrine!

The Chikugo River Fireworks Festival – 15,000 Fireworks Light Up the Summer Night Sky!
With a rich history of over 370 years, the Chikugo River Fireworks Festival is held every August in Kurume City. It is one of the largest fireworks displays in western Japan, featuring around 15,000 fireworks that light up the summer night sky with brilliant colors.

One of the biggest highlights is the chance to watch the powerful fireworks up close from two venues. The contrast between the massive bursts of light blooming in the night sky and their dazzling reflection on the river’s surface is a breathtakingly magical sight. Additionally, the venues along the riverbanks are lined with rows of food stalls, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the festive Japanese atmosphere.

Event Date: August 5, 2026 (Wednesday)
The event will proceed in light rain. In the event of severe weather, it will be postponed to August 7, 2026 (Friday).

The Former Moji Mitsui Club - Where Einstein Once Stayed!
The historic port district of Moji, located in Kitakyushu City, flourished as a bustling international trading hub from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. One of the area’s most iconic landmarks is the Former Moji Mitsui Club, built in 1921 as a social club for the Mitsui Company, one of Japan’s leading trading companies at the time.

This elegant wooden Western-style building showcases traditional European half-timbered architecture, while its interior is beautifully adorned with refined art deco decorations. In 1922, the renowned physicist Dr. Albert Einstein stayed here, and is said to have enjoyed Moji’s natural scenery and local sights. The guest room where he stayed is now open to the public as the Einstein Memorial Room.

Step inside and experience a space filled with the glamorous history of Moji Port!

Stunning Sights of Seasonal Flowers at Oto Flower Park
Roadside Station Oto Sakura Kaido in the town of Oto is a delightful spot to spend a day, as it is equipped with a child-friendly playground and hot spring facilities.

The adjacent flower park is a vast space covered with approximately 200,000 sunflowers that burst into bloom around early to mid-July.
An eight-meter-tall observation deck stands at the center of the area, offering panoramic views of the breathtaking scenery painted in vibrant yellow that stretches as far as the eye can see.

The peak season for cosmos flowers begins around late October, so it is also a great time to visit to enjoy autumn’s unique floral scenery.
