Iwate is famous for its long and dramatic Pacific coastline, forming half of the Michinoku Coastal Trail hiking route. Today we’re showing off one of the most iconic sights along the way: Ofunato’s Goishi Coast! ✨

This beautiful region offers four kilometers of paths along the cliffs, all boasting amazing views of the rocky shore and the electric blue ocean below. Pictured in this post is the Kaminari-iwa (Thunder Rock), named after the huge sound of the waves crashing below it. It’s an incredible place where you can feel the power of nature with your very own eyes and ears 🌊🌊🌊

The Goishi Coast Information Center is just a short 5-minute walk away from the Kaminari-iwa, so come check it out even if you aren’t a big hiker! The region also offers camping and a range of other beautiful sights to make your visit worth the while! 🧭🏕️

This cafeteria just across from the entrance of Chuson-ji Temple is serving up southern Iwate’s traditional mochi dishes. And the best part? You can savor 5 types of mochi (red bean, ginger, zunda, nameko mushroom, ozoni soup) at once✨!

Start with the red bean mochi and work your way up to enjoy the alternating sweet and savory flavors, and finish with the refreshing ozoni soup🥢. As you bite into the warm, soft mochi, the aroma of fresh rice fills your senses. 😋

Southern Iwate’s rich mochi culture dates back to the Edo period, and boasts over 300 different regional varieties today! In Hiraizumi and Ichinoseki, mochi is eaten not only during the New Year, but all throughout the year on important occasions.

Hidden on a hill overlooking the town of Hiraizumi, Chuson-ji is one of Iwate’s most defining locations: a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a place filled with history, culture and tradition.

The temple complex was first constructed in the 12th century by the Oshu Fujiwara clan as a　representation of the Buddhist Pure Land. While many of the original buildings were destroyed by fires, the complex still contains over 3,000 exquisite Heian-period treasures and important cultural assets. The most famous of those is the Konjikido, a stunning golden hall decorated with intricate maki-e lacquer and inlaid mother of pearl that enshrines the four leaders of the Oshu Fujiwara clan.

Photos of the Konjikido are not allowed, so you’ll need to visit in person to witness its true beauty! While you’re there, take in the tranquility and rich heritage of Chuson-ji, and stop off at the many other historic sites around Hiraizumi to find out more about this fascinating town.

Thinking of visiting Hiraizumi? As one of Iwate’s three UNESCO World Heritage sites, it’s important to learn about the rich history and culture📜 that surrounds it before you go to fully appreciate it. But fear not- the Hiraizumi World Heritage Information Center is here to teach you everything you need to know! 📚

The museum inside takes you back to the late 11th and 12th centuries, when Hiraizumi was founded, flourished under the Oshu Fujiwara clan, and finally fell from grace. A cinematic video room🎥 explains Buddhism and the Pure Land philosophy that became the foundation of Hiraizumi’s culture, and a topographic map illustrates the construction process of the many temples and gardens. 🏯

Other exhibitions include artifacts excavated from the town🏺 and interactive exhibits on the valuable items the Oshu Fujiwara clan traded. You can feel the real weight of a pouch of gold and touch seal skin! 💰

At the reception desk, you can borrow free audio guides in four languages 🗣️ (Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean), and many exhibits also have English explanations. Make this your first stop when coming to Hiraizumi!

The Hachimantai Aspite Line opened on April 15, unveiling the magnificent Snow Corridor❄️
Enormous snow walls towering up to 5 meters tall silently watch over the slowly budding spring of Hachimantai🌸
As you drive through the Snow Corridor, the sheer snow walls overlap at every curve, creating a mysterious sight akin to a gateway to another world🌀
The crisp April sky and sunlight contrast beautifully with the snow.
This year is warmer than previous years, so the snow corridor is melting faster than usual.
If you want to catch this view, now’s your chance!

🌸 It’s time to show off the Morioka sakura again! 🌸

These pictures were taken around Uchimaru and Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park). Each spring, the park and surrounding area come to life with pink and white cherry blossoms, making them the perfect place to take a stroll or stop for a picnic amid Morioka’s plentiful nature.

Full bloom came to Iwate this year around mid-April. But don’t worry if you missed it – the sakura will be back next year for you to catch, just as beautiful as ever! 📸

Morioka’s Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree reached full bloom 🌸 on April 13th, drawing crowds of people all week to gaze at its striking flowers glittering in the sunlight ✨. This tree is an over 350 year old Edohigan Cherry Tree, a species known for its long lifespan. Some even live to over 1000 years old.
Here’s to another 700 years of the Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree! 🥂

We’ll be posting more about Morioka’s other cherry blossoms as well, so stay tuned and take a moment to enjoy Iwate’s spring with us! 🌱 🍃

Spring is coming to Iwate a little earlier in 2026! 🍃
On the morning of March 17th, the famous Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree in Morioka had its winter wrappings 🧣 removed, about one week earlier than previous years. For the people of Morioka, this symbolizes the beginning of spring! 🌻☀️🐝

And speaking of spring in Japan, there’s no better way to enjoy it than cherry blossom viewing (hanami) 🌸🍡🍵! The Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree and the rest of Iwate’s beautiful cherry blossoms are expected to start blooming in early April and reach full bloom mid-April, so come and see them if you can!

March 11 marks 15 years since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami caused the deaths of around 20,000 people across Japan and enormous damage centered on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region. Significant portions of Iwate’s coastal cities were completely destroyed and washed away by the tsunami. Many precious lives were lost that day, with casualties from the disaster amounting to approximately 5,100 deaths and 1,100 missing persons within the prefecture.

Iwate Prefecture observes a moment of silence at 2:46 PM, the moment the earthquake struck, to honor the memories of those who lost their lives and their hopes for the future of the region.

These pictures were taken at Kamaishi Memorial Park and the neighboring Tsunami Memorial Hall. At the Memorial Park, the names of the deceased victims are etched into the lower wall, and the height of the tsunami is inscribed on the upper wall. The Memorial Hall displays the actual scene of the disaster and teaches disaster prevention, ensuring that the lessons learned from that day will never be forgotten.

Reconstruction and restoration efforts in Iwate Prefecture are steadily progressing, allowing us to overcome the sorrow experienced that day and move forward with conviction.
