Creative Residency Arita

Creative Residency Arita This is an artist and designer residency program of ceramic work production in Arita, Saga prefecture Japan.

The programme was launched in June 2016 with the much appreciated support of The Mondriaan Fund and The Creative Industries Fund of the Netherlands, initiated by Scholten & Baijings, co-creative directors of the 2016/ project. The latter fund is based on The Creative Industries Agreement established in 2013 between the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tokyo and Saga Prefecture. The 201

6/ project was also organized by Saga Prefecture and led by the two design studios, Scholten & Baijings and Teruhiro Yanagihara, both acting as creative directors. The project’s aim was to develop a contemporary porcelain tableware brand together with 16 international designers and 10 potters in Arita.

リンケ・ヨーステンとエリザ・ストリンナが、オランダから有田に到着しました。

有田でのオリエンテーションを終え、これから自身の制作に取り組みます。

オリエンテーションでは、有田地域の様々な場所を巡り、窯元や、磁器づくりの工程に欠かせない原料の生産者など、2人のプロジェクトに特に関わりの深い場所を訪れました。これは、有田の磁器産業、伝統、文化に入り込んでいく第一歩です。2人がこの環境とどう向き合い、自身のリサーチやプロジェクトにどうつなげていくのか、楽しみにしています。

オリエンテーションの締めくくりとして、エリザとリンケが自己紹介プレゼンテーションを行います。会場はアリタセラ内のギャラリー青磁です。

Rinke and Elisa have arrived from the Netherlands.

After completing their orientation in Arita, they are now beginning work on their own creations.

During the orientation, Rinke and Elisa visited various locations throughout the Arita area: kilns, and important producers of ingredients for the porcelain process — especially those relevant to their projects. This is the start of their immersion into Arita's porcelain industry, tradition and culture. We are looking forward to seeing how they navigate this environment and translate it into their research and their projects.

To wrap up the orientation period, Elisa and Rinke will give a self-introduction presentation at Gallery Seiji, Arita Sera.

From January 9, 2026, LAID BUG will host a solo exhibition by Jonathan Vervoort.
Based in Amsterdam, Jonathan Vervoort is an artist who creates works while moving between digital experimentation and material traditions. He explores how digital interventions transform the identity of materials, producing hybrid works where natural objects, historical materials, and digital processes intersect. His practice employs 3D-printed porcelain, 3D modeling, and 3D scans of natural elements such as grass, moss, leaves, and branches. In 2022, he held a solo exhibition at Base-Alpha Gallery (Antwerp, Belgium) and has participated in various group exhibitions, mainly in the Netherlands.

For this exhibition, Jonathan presents porcelain ceramics created during his residency at the Saga Ceramics Research Laboratory in Arita, Saga Prefecture. Natural objects collected from various locations in Kyushu were 3D-scanned, and the resulting digital data was transferred onto porcelain using glaze transfer techniques. By applying different “digital skins” to porcelain of the same shape, he confronted the question of how the “soul” of Arita ware—the first porcelain ever made in Japan—changes when digital intervention is introduced.

Jonathan’s experimental process invites viewers into an unpredictable experience where myth, memory, and technology intertwine, offering new perspectives on the relationship between humanity and the digital world. We sincerely invite you to take this opportunity to view his work.

先日、CRAプロジェクトを終えたオクターブ。
滞在期間中にインタビューを行い、制作の様子や作品について聞きました。

We interviewed Octave, a creator who visited Arita in the latter half of 2025.

オクターヴは、グリッチアートと日本の磁器技術を融合させるフランス出身のアーティスト／デザイナーです。彼の作品は、会席料理に触発されたテーブルウェアから、デジタル歪みを取り入れた彫刻的器まで幅広く、視覚的にも触感的にも多層的な造形を追求しています。彼はアムステルダムに自身の磁器スタジオを構えており、小型窯と3Dプリンターを駆使して繊細な造形作品を制作しています。オランダでは「型作りの名手」としても知られています。

Octave merges glitch aesthetics and Japanese porcelain tradition. He creates sculptural tableware inspired by Kaiseki and digital distortion.
Octave has his own porcelain studio in Amsterdam, with smaller scale kiln. He works with 3D printing to create very intricate objects. He is known as a mold-making master in the Netherlands.

12月10日にCRA2025年第2期の最終発表会を開催しました。クリエイターの作品鑑賞と共に、コンセプトや制作背景などを聞いていただき、いい交流の機会となりました。また、今年アーティストを受け入れてもらったマッチングキルンの皆様とのトークセッションも行い、今後のCRAの運営の参考になりました。
