Educational collaboration.

Today, Ambassador Naito recieved Professor Wakes Singini, Vice Chancellor of Mzuzu University, to exchange views on strengthening academic cooperation between Japan and Malawi.

Prof. Singini visited Japan for TICAD 9, where he met with representatives from several Japanese universities and signed an MOU on academic cooperation with Soka University. A delegation of professors from Soka University is expected to visit Malawi from September onward.

Ambassador Naito and Prof. Singini reaffirmed the importance of further promoting university-to-university cooperation and academic exchanges between Japan and Malawi, paving the way for stronger educational ties between the two countries.

JAPAN-MALAWI FORUM 2026 AND NSIMA PARTY.

On 11th July 2026, the Japan–Malawi Forum 2026 and Nsima Party, themed “Dialogue for Designing the Future,” brought together former Japanese Ambassadors to Malawi, current and former Japanese volunteers in Malawi, as well as Malawian diplomats, Malawians living in Japan, and other African communities living in Japan at the JICA Centre.

The forum was a meaningful event inspired by the volunteers’ dedication to uplifting and improving the lives of Malawian communities, especially through contributions and donations that support the health sector. The focus was on strengthening collaboration, drawing on experience, and renewing commitment to create lasting impact.

The event also featured warm cultural exchanges, including presentations and live music performances by the Kijoko Band, as well as the enjoyment of both Japanese and Malawian cuisines, including nsima.

Handing Over of the New Lilongwe Bridge.

In a significant step towards improving infrastructure and accessibility, Mr. Imafuku, the Director General of Africa Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, officially handed over a newly constructed Lilongwe bridge to the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Hon. Jappie Mhango on 12th February 2026.

This new bridge is set to alleviate traffic congestion in the city, providing a much needed solution to the growing challenges of urban transport. The initiative is a vital component of the bilateral relations between Malawi and Japan, reflecting a commitment to enhancing cooperation and infrastructure development.
