On 29 August 2026, the Embassy of the Republic of Botswana participated in the Baytown Summer Festival in Chiba, Japan, as part of its ongoing public diplomacy efforts to strengthen mutual understanding, goodwill, and people-to-people relations between Botswana and Japan. The event provided a valuable platform for the Embassy to engage directly with the local community and promote greater awareness of Botswana.

Through the Botswana exhibition booth, local residents and communities had the opportunity to discover more about Botswana, the enduring traditions of Batswana, tourism, handicrafts, and the country’s distinctive cultural expressions.

On 25 August 2026, the Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in Japan held a meeting with Borderlink, Inc., to explore opportunities for Batswana interested in working in Japan as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs).Borderlink is a Japan-based education company that recruits and places ALTs in public elementary, junior high and senior high schools across Japan.

During the meeting, Borderlink highlighted opportunities for suitably qualified candidates interested in experiencing Japan while contributing to English-language education.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:

• A Bachelor’s Degree or higher
• At least 12 years of education in which English was the main medium of instruction
• Native-level English proficiency

On 21 August 2026, the Ambassador of the Republic of Botswana to Japan, Prof. Boga Thura Manatsha, held a productive meeting with the Mayor of Setagaya City, Hon. Hosaka Nobuto. The purpose of the meeting was to explore opportunities for collaboration between the Embassy and Setagaya City. Hon. Nobuto thanked Ambassador Manatsha for initiating the meeting, and noted that he first met Ambassador Manatsha when he (Hon. Nobuto) attended a cultural event organised by his city. The Embassy of Botswana participated in that event, and the Mayor and Ambassador Manatsha had the opportunity to exchange few ideas then.

Hon. Nobuto said that his city promotes and cherishes multiculturalism, and is ready to pursue relations with the Embassy in the areas of cultural exchanges/activities, promotion of trade, investment, and business opportunities between Botswana and Japan.

On his part, Ambassador Manatsha noted that Botswana is a peaceful, secure, and stable country, and invited Japanese investors and Japanese tourists to visit Botswana. He further said that the Embassy is ready to engage in the areas of cultural exchanges, sports, and educational exchanges.

Specifically, Ambassador Manatsha asked the Setagaya City to consider inviting Botswana citizens to participate in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. Under this programme, participants from all over the world come to Japan to teach English language. Botswana has more rhan enough teachers to export to other countries.

Hon. Nobuto and Ambassador Manatsha emphasised that it is important to work together to promote people-to-people exchanges. Ambassador Manatsha concluded by noting that Botswana and Japan celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations this year, and it will be important for the Embassy to engage the city more often moving foward.

On 19 August 2026, the Ambassador of the Republic of Botswana to Japan, H.E. Prof. Boga Thura Manatsha, presented his Letters of Credence to His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, the Emperor of Japan, formally marking the commencement of his duties as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Botswana to Japan.

The presentation of credentials comes during a particularly significant year for the two countries, as Botswana and Japan commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations. Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations in 1966, Botswana and Japan have enjoyed warm and cordial relations founded on mutual respect, friendship, and cooperation. Over the past six decades, the partnership has continued to grow across various areas, including development cooperation, education and human resource development, trade and investment, tourism, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

During the conversation that His Majesty had with H.E Prof. Manatsha, His Majesty noted that he learnt that H.E Prof. Manatsha studied at Hiroshima University in Japan, and wanted to know more about his experience and impression of Japan and the Japanese people when he was a student. His Majesty also said that he hoped H.E Prof. Manatsha will work hard to continue strengthening the relations between the two countries. On his part, H.E Prof. Manatsha has vowed to continue strengthening the relations between the two countries in various sectors.

The Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in Japan has been engaging different stakeholders across Japan looking for opportunities for Batswana and Botswana. It has actively been marketing the country.

Japan faces a serious shortage of labour force in different sectors, such as factories, health care, construction, assistant language teachers, hospitality, and agriculture (farm work), among others. Botswana has many skilled people in some of these sectors. However, one stands a better chance to secure a job in most of these sectors if he/she has basic to intermediate Japanese language proficiency. It should be noted that Japanese is a national and official language in Japan. It is the language of everyday use in official, work, and social settings.

The Embassy, therefore, encourages Batswana, who wish to find opportunities in Japan, to learn Japanese language. They can do so online, _YouTube_ , or official platforms, such as _minato_ , (JF Japanese e-Learning Minato), operated by the Japan Foundation. At the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and the University of Botswana (UB), elementary Japanese language courses are offered, although at a small scale. Should there be evident be high demand for the Japanese language in Botswana, the Embassy can motivate for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to assist with more teachers.

In a nutshell, the Embassy encourages Batswana, with interest to look for opportunities here, to learn Japanese language. The Embassy can try as much as it can, as it has been doing, to look for opportunities, but without basic Japanese language, opportunities will come and go.

𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗧𝗼𝗸𝘆𝗼-日本ソフトボール協会との意見交換（東京）

For years, Japan International Development Cooperation (JICA) has been assisting Botswana Softball Association (BSA) in many ways. For instance, JICA has been dispatching trainers/coaches to assist BSA, and, at some point, Botswana softball players visited Japan for training.

Today, Ambassador-Designate, Prof. Boga Thura Manatsha, and his team engaged the Executive Director of Japan Softball Association (JSA), Mr. Tomoaki OKAMOTO, and the Deputy Secretary General of the association, Mr Tomohiro HISAKA, to find ways of strengthening the relations between them and the BSA.

One key area that the Embassy team explored was an active formal working relations between the JSA and the BSA (especially focusing on capacity building and training of both Botswana coaches/trainers, and players). Japan has one of the best facilities and coaches. Secondly, the Embassy team explored ways in which top-notch Botswana softball players can be assisted to pe*****te the Japanese softball league (joining and playing for teams in Japan).

The Embassy team is happy with the suggestions and advise from the JSA side, and will engage the BSA and JICA-Botswana on these matters. The Embassy was also excited to hear the Japanese side praising Botswana’s softball players, especially pitchers for having some excellent skills, which only need some polishing. Mr OKAMOTO shared that he once played against the Botswana national softball team, and found the Botswana pitchers quite outstanding.

The Embassy remains committed to unlocking opportunities for Batswana and Botswana in various sectors. The role of the Embassy is to look for opportunities, establish contacts, and create line of communication between different entities in Botswana and their counterparts in Japan and countries of accreditation. Sports remains one area that can create jobs and raise the image of the country in the global stage. Already, Botswana has a young basketball player playing for a Japanese team since April 2026.

"𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲". Ambassador-Designate, Prof. Boga Manatsha, while recently in Hiroshima city to attend the 81st commemoration of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, visited Tromso Co., Ltd, located in Onomichi city, Hiroshima Prefecture. With its motto: "Nurturing Greenery, Protecting the Future", Tromso was founded in 1994. Its three core businesses are: Agritech business; Energy business, and Water purifier business. The company developed and commercialised the "Grind Mill", a machine that converts rice husks, under a temperature of more than 350 degrees celsius, into solid fuel (firewood like). Tromso's technology also produces biochar from wood, bamboo, rice husks, and livestock manure, collectively referred to as biomass residues.

During the discussion, Tromso said that they are also capable of developing "Grinding Mill", which can convert groundnuts shells (makapi a manoko), cow dung, sorghum and maize residues into solid fuel (wood like). This, in the company's view, can help to reduce deforestation, and emissions of harmful gas by using the solid fuel produced using the combustion method.

Prof. Manatsha appreciated the company's technology, and noted that he will get in touch with the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant research institutes, who may find collaborating with Tromso worth exploring. Already, Tromso has its technology used in Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal, Ghana, Madagascar, and Vietnam. It is also actively engaging Egypt and Uganda, among others.

The Embassy believes that the right institutions in Botswana, such as the Botswana University Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN), the National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (NARDI), and the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI), may be interested in working closely with Tromso. Still in Nagasaki to attend the commemoration of the 81st atomic bombing of the city on 9 August 2026, Ambassador-Designate, Prof. Boga Thura Manatsha, held engagement with Nagasaki Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce investment opportunities in Botswana, as detailed in the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) and the broader National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12), among other national documents and strategies. Nagasaki is a historic city in Japan. It was the only city which linked Japan to the outside world during Japan's self-imposed national isolation ( _sakoku_ ) from 1639 to 1854. It is well-known known for its thriving tourism industry and heavy industries, ship building, among others.

Prof. Manatsha engaged the Executive Director of Nagasaki Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mr. Yasuichi Matsunaga, and his senior executives. This Chamber of Commerce has about 4,000 business establishments/members under it. Mr. Matsunaga noted that they have limited information about Botswana, and the Ambassador's visit was really helpful and timely as Japanese companies are now looking to expand abroad, especially in the critical rare earth minerals. He also thanked Prof. Manatsha for sharing with them both the soft copy and hard copy of the BETP document, which the Embassy has translated into Japanese.

However, one senior executive noted that Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) had shared with them snippets of the fruitful engagement that the Botswana Embassy team, led by Prof Manatsha, held with them, two months ago. This shows that the economic engagements that the Embassy has vigorously embarked on are slowly reaching a lot of stakeholders across Japan.

Prof. Manatsha and his team remain committed to advancing Botswana’s national interests across Japan. The Embassy will approach different sectors since it is apparently clear that Botswana is less known in Japan. Slowly, some Japanese investors are showing interest on Botswana, and have since undertaken trips to the country. Plans to organise business trips by JETRO to Botswana are also being thought of. The Embassy is also planning a business seminar with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO-Tokyo Office).

Ambassador-Designate, Prof. Boga Thura Manatsha, is in Nagasaki city, Japan, to attend the 81st commemoration of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in August 1945. Prof. Manatsha has, however, arranged that he meets with key stakeholders before the commemoration. So far, he has paid courtesy calls on the Mayor of Nagasaki, the President of Nagasaki Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the President of Nagasaki University.

Nagasaki University is globally renowned for advanced studies in the medical field, especially tropical diseases, and Engineering. The President of the University thanked Prof. Manatsha for the visit and commented that the people of Nagasaki truly appreciate such support. He also emphasised that Nagasaki University is well-known for its robust programmes in the Medical, and Engineering fields.

Prof. Manatsha had a clear proposal to the University. He informed the President of the University that the University of Botswana (UB) has a 450 beds University Teaching hospital, attached to the Faculty of Medicine. He stated that he would like the UB and Nagasaki University to explore ways of collaboration, for instance, in capacity building, student-staff exchange, joint researches, and joint supervision, etc. Prof. Manatsha also said that the Government of Botswana will appreciate scholarships at post-graduate levels for its citizens. He informed the University that he will engage the UB and relevant authorities to facilitate further engagements with Nagasaki University.

The President of Nagasaki University noted that they work closely with Kenya and see no reason why they cannot explore opportunities with Botswana. Prof. Manatsha remains committed to advancing Botswana’s national interests in Japan from different sectors. He urges Batswana to support the Embassy's efforts in Japan.
