𝐁𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐮 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.

Bungoma County is set to host the highly anticipated Imbalu (Circumcision) Festival from 11th to 15th August 2026 at the Sang'alo Cultural Centre, bringing together the Bukusu community and cultural enthusiasts from Kenya, Uganda, and beyond.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with the Bukusu Council of Elders drawn from Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, and Uganda, the Director of Culture, Moses Chebonya, who represented the CECM for Gender, Culture, Youth and Sports, said the county had put in place adequate measures to ensure the successful hosting of the festival.

"We are fully prepared to host Imbalu Festival 2026 and are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a successful celebration of our cultural heritage," said Chebonya.

Chebonya further acknowledged the support of various stakeholders and partners, including Mama TV Uganda, whose collaboration and media partnership continue to play an important role in promoting and documenting the cultural significance of the festival across the region.

Also present was the CECM for Education, Eng. Agnes Wachiye, who underscored the importance of cultural festivals in preserving traditions and educating younger generations on their cultural identity."Imbalu offers a valuable opportunity for young people to learn, appreciate, and preserve their cultural heritage," said Wachiye.

The Bukusu Council of Elders, led by Richard Walukano, commended the county government for its commitment to supporting cultural activities and pledged to work closely with all partners to ensure a peaceful and well-organized festival."Imbalu remains a symbol of our identity and pride, and we are committed to ensuring a peaceful and successful festival," said Walukano.

As preparations gather momentum, Bungoma County remains committed to delivering a successful Imbalu Festival 2026 while strengthening its position as a leading destination for cultural tourism, heritage preservation, and regional cultural exchange.

**Cheers and Celebration as Bungoma Dominates the cultural dance KAMABEKA*

There was great jubilation and bursts of celebration at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church Hall in Siaya County after Bungoma County clinched position one in the cultural dance category with an electrifying performance of the traditional Kamabeka during the ongoing Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA).

Performing under the able leadership of Mercy Wakoli, the Bungoma cultural team thrilled the audience with powerful footwork, vibrant costumes, rhythmic drumbeats, and excellent coordination that showcased the richness of their cultural heritage. Their energetic routine drew loud cheers from spectators and earned top scores from the judges for originality, authenticity, and stage precision.

As the winners were announced, the hall erupted into song, dance, and jululation, with county officials, supporters, and fellow competitors joining in the moment of celebration. The victory was proudly received as a symbol of Bungoma’s strong cultural identity and dedication to preserving traditional values through art.

The win has further boosted Bungoma County’s medal tally at the ongoing KICOSCA games, reinforcing its growing reputation as a formidable force in both sporting and cultural competitions on the national stage.

*Netball Queens Lead Bungoma Charge with Convincing Day Three Victories at KICOSCA*

As the Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) enters Day Three today in Siaya County, Bungoma County continues to shine across multiple disciplines, posting impressive results and demonstrating strong team spirit.

The netball ladies were in dominant form, recording a resounding 36–6 victory over Tana River County before edging out Meru County 22–3 in another disciplined performance that showcased their skill, teamwork, and tactical depth.

In handball, the men’s team bowed out after failing to qualify for the next stage. However, the ladies rebounded strongly after a disputed fixture with Kisumu County, where they declined to play following a verification issue. They went on to register a commanding 10–5 win against Kericho County, restoring confidence and momentum for the county.

In the mind games arena, Bungoma also celebrated success in Scrabble, with Geofrey Wafula clinching a win for the county.

Speaking after the matches, David Maling’a, the Chief Officer for Sports, expressed confidence in the teams’ prospects, saying the county remains optimistic of bringing home trophies. He encouraged all participants to remain focused, united, and hopeful as the competition intensifies in the coming days.

*Bungoma Deputy Governor Calls for Stronger Action on GBV, and Women’s Leadership*

Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany has called for enhanced collaboration between government institutions, civil society, and development partners to address rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and strengthen women’s leadership across the county.

Speaking during an engagement forum at the County Headquarters attended by UN Women and the ECHO Network Africa Foundation (ENAF), Mbatiany applauded the organisations for their continued support in advancing gender equality and promoting inclusive governance. She commended UN Women for its leadership under the SDG 5 framework and lauded ENAF for empowering women through mentorship, training, sensitisation, and leadership development efforts she said have boosted women’s participation in political and governance spaces in Bungoma and Vihiga.

The Deputy Governor noted that although the Kenya–Finland Bilateral Programme on GBV Prevention and Response had made significant progress, its impact has been limited by the longstanding underfunding of the County Department of Gender. She stressed the need for increased budget allocation to strengthen gender-focused programmes and bolster the county’s response to GBV.

Mbatiany further challenged women to contest for elective positions rather than rely on nominations, emphasising that deep-rooted cultural norms continue to hinder women from seeking political office. She urged communities and leaders to help dismantle these barriers and support women aspiring for leadership roles.

She reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to gender equality as outlined in Governor Lusaka’s manifesto, the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), and the Gender Mainstreaming Policy. She also appreciated partners for supporting the development of the Bungoma County Women’s Manifesto, describing it as a key roadmap for enhancing women’s participation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Later, the Deputy Governor officially flagged off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, marking the county’s renewed commitment to ending GBV.

Hellen Muchunu, who led the UN Women delegation, commended the Bungoma County Government for its continued efforts and reaffirmed UN Women’s commitment to supporting gender equality initiatives in the region.

*Devolution Through Sports: 2025 KICOSCA Games Officially kicks off in Siaya*

As the KICOSCA Games officially kicked off today at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County, excitement and anticipation filled the air as hundreds of participants from across the country gathered for this year’s vibrant championship.

During the opening ceremony, the newly appointed KICOSCA Patron and Siaya Governor, James Orengo, reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to advancing sports development and elevating the stature of the annual event. He assured participants that Siaya County is fully prepared to host a memorable and well-coordinated tournament, noting that the games play a crucial role in strengthening unity and highlighting the diverse talents within the public service.

Also addressing the gathering, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa applauded Siaya County for raising the bar in hosting the games. He pointed out notable improvements in organisation, facility readiness, and hospitality compared to last year’s event in Kakamega, commending the host county for its dedication to excellence.

The Council of Governors Chairperson, Simon Kachapin, was also present and emphasized the deeper significance of the KICOSCA Games. He noted that beyond the sporting spectacle, the event promotes discipline, teamwork, and national cohesion among public servants from all 47 counties. Kachapin added that such platforms create opportunities for learning, collaboration, and celebrating Kenya’s rich cultural heritage.

The KICOSCA Secretary Technical person and Bungoma County Director for Youth and Sports, David Kalamu, expressed confidence in the outstanding level of preparedness displayed by the participating counties. He highlighted the steady growth of the games, describing them as a powerful avenue for nurturing talent and enhancing inter-county cooperation and cultural exchange.

Kalamu, who spearheaded the digital registration system, noted that the process was efficient and seamless, ensuring accurate capture of participants’ details and enabling a smooth start to the competitions.

Under the theme “Celebrating Devolution through Sports and Culture,” the 2025 KICOSCA Games promise a dynamic week of thrilling competitions, cultural performances, and enriching shared experiences as counties showcase the best of their talents and unity.
