AFA LEADS STAKEHOLDERS IN BOOSTING COTTON SUB SECTOR IN LAMU COUNTY

AFA Chairperson Hon. Cornelly Serem has led a high-level delegation of stakeholders in a major agricultural intervention aimed at revitalizing cotton farming in Lamu County through the distribution of 3 tonnes of BT cotton seeds.

The initiative, implemented through a collaboration between the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) and the County Government of Lamu, is designed to boost productivity among cotton farmers and strengthen agricultural value chains across key production zones in the county.

Hon. Serem announced that the support programme will be scaled up from 3 tonnes to 9 tonnes of BT cotton seeds in the next planting season to expand production and reach more farmers. He commended farmers and the county leadership for positioning Lamu as a leading cotton-producing region contributing over 60 percent of national output.

Speaking during the launch at Mpeketoni ATC on Thursday morning, AFA Chairperson Hon. Cornelly Serem was accompanied by Board Director Member Mr. Kitivo, Director of the Miraa, Pyrethrum, Fibre and Other Industrial Crops Directorate (MPFICD) Ms. Grace Kyalo and other senior officers from the Directorate.

Deputy Governor Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj reaffirmed the county government’s commitment under Governor Issa Timamy to deepen collaboration with AFA and investors in expanding agricultural opportunities, noting that agriculture remains central to Lamu’s economic transformation.

The CECM for Agriculture Hon. James Gichu noted that the introduction of BT cotton by AFA has addressed long-standing challenges of access to quality seed, which had significantly constrained productivity. He added that continued collaboration between AFA and the County Government is strengthening agriculture as a key driver of rural incomes and economic growth.

The support package distributed during the launch included 3 tonnes of BT cotton seeds, 10,000 bixa seedlings, 10,500 bottles of pesticides and 16 motorized sprayer machines for cooperatives, all valued at KSh 20 million.

Farmers and cooperative leaders who attended the event at Mpeketoni ATC welcomed the programme, describing it as a timely intervention that will revive cotton farming and improve livelihoods across the region.

Kenyan Macadamia Farmers to Form Cooperatives as Sector Sets KSh 100 Farm Gate Price
Farmers in Kenya’s macadamia sector have agreed to form cooperatives as part of extensive reforms aimed at streamlining the value chain and improving earnings. The resolution was reached during a two-day forum that brought together Agriculture and Food Authority as a regulator, processors and farmers, where participants emphasized that cooperatives will enhance bargaining power, improve market access and curb widespread macadamia theft.
AFA Acting Director General Calistus Kundu, who graced the forum, reiterated that organized farmer groups will bring order and accountability to the sector adding that through AFA there will be a pricing committee comprising key stakeholders in the sector that will see to it that farmers get what they dully deserve from their produce.
During the forum it was agreed that macadamia farm gate price be set at Ksh. 100 per kilogram a move intended to protect farmers from exploitation by middlemen and ensure consistent returns amid fluctuating market conditions. It was noted that noted that predictable pricing will encourage increased production and long-term investment in macadamia farming.
To support the implementation of the agreed pricing framework, the Agriculture and Food Authority, in conjunction with the MACNUT Association of Kenya, will spearhead nationwide sensitization campaigns, focus on educating farmers about the farm gate price guidelines, strengthening compliance, and promoting transparency across the value chain.
Additionally, AFA is developing a traceability system to ensure macadamia produce can be tracked from the farm to the market. The Acting DG said that aggregators will be required to present prove of where to whom Macadamia nuts were purchased. The system is expected to enhance quality assurance, improve compliance with national and international standards, and eliminate fraudulent practices that have undermined the sector’s growth.
Farmers were also advised to adopt best post-harvest practices, including the use of quality Dehuskers that do not crack nuts and cause losses. AFA and MACNUT will further lead publicity and capacity-building initiatives to equip farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge, signalling a coordinated push to strengthen Kenya’s macadamia brand.

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has convened a stakeholders’ consultative forum bringing together key players in the macadamia subsector to plan reforms aimed at strengthening the value chain. The meeting focuses on building consensus around price stabilization and introducing measures to guarantee fair compensation for farmers.

During the session, macadamia farmers raised concerns over persistently low farm-gate prices, which they say undermine profitability and discourage production. They also pointed out inadequate quality standards and gaps in traceability as key issues that limit access to premium markets and reduce competitiveness.

The Forum is also aimed at exploring the possibility of organizing farmers into cooperatives to enhance their bargaining power. Such structures are expected to enable collective marketing, improve quality control and give farmers a stronger voice in determining prices within the sector.

This move aligns with Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Sen. Mutahi Kagwe constant call for all stakeholders to align and increase efforts toward protecting farmers’ income and restore stability in the sector.

Growing a Greener Future in Bungoma County

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) continues to advance national climate action and the Presidential directive to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 through a tree-planting initiative in Bungoma County, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture.

The exercise was carried out in partnership with Masaba, Menu and Kaptanai Primary Schools, bringing together AFA officers, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and local communities in a shared effort to restore forest cover and build climate resilience.

A total of 20,000 tree seedlings were planted across the three schools, contributing to AFA’s target of planting 1,000,000 trees in the 2025/2026 financial year and nurturing a culture of environmental stewardship among learners.

With technical guidance from KFS, the exercise emphasized proper species selection and sound planting practices to enhance survival rates and long-term impact. It also served as a platform to raise awareness on sustainable land use and the critical role of trees in supporting agriculture and climate action.

The activity was graced by area Chief Isaac Sitati, underscoring the importance of local leadership in driving grassroots conservation. The AFA team also paid a courtesy call to Bungoma Forest Conservator Eric Abungu to strengthen collaboration and coordination of conservation efforts within the county.

By linking tree planting with agriculture, the initiative supports improved soil health, water conservation and farm productivity while reinforcing partnerships between government institutions, schools and local communities.
