A bold new story of opportunity and growth in Torongo

With the introduction of tea cultivation in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County has taken its place among Kenya's tea-producing regions, opening a fresh pathway for farmers to diversify their livelihoods and participate in one of the country's most celebrated agricultural value chains.

This exciting development reflects the growing confidence in tea as a catalyst for rural transformation, enterprise development and community prosperity. As tea takes root in Baringo, it carries with it the promise of new investments, stronger local economies and a brighter future for farming households.

The Tea Board of Kenya celebrates this important milestone and looks forward to supporting the county's journey as it nurtures its newest crop and contributes to Kenya's rich tea heritage.

Every tea-growing region begins with a single seedling. Today, Baringo plants its future.

PARLIAMENT REOPENS DEBATE ON THE TEA (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2023

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock has resumed consideration of the Tea (Amendment) Bill, 2023 following a directive for fresh scrutiny to ensure transparency and address concerns raised during earlier deliberations.

The Bill seeks to enhance accountability in the tea sector, promote value addition, and review provisions relating to the Tea Levy. During stakeholder engagements, the Tea Board of Kenya and the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) presented differing views on the proposed levy, highlighting the need for balanced discussions that safeguard farmer interests while supporting the sustainable growth of the tea industry.

The Committee is also reviewing concerns relating to potential conflicts of interest to ensure that decisions made reflect the best interests of tea farmers and the sector at large.

As discussions continue, the focus remains on strengthening the tea value chain, increasing returns to farmers, and ensuring more value from Kenyan tea is retained within the country.
