A Participatory Scenario Planning (PSP) workshop in Lokiriama Sub-County, Turkana County, bringing together communities, elders, county government and partners to understand and prepare for the October–December (OND) 2026 rainfall season.


Turkana County Director, Francis, guiding participants through the OND 2026 climate outlook, translating scientific forecast information into practical and locally relevant actions.

PSP process is also incorporating Indigenous and Traditional Knowledge (ITK) shared by Turkana elders, whose generations of experience observing rainfall patterns, vegetation, livestock behaviour, winds, temperatures and other environmental indicators provide valuable local perspectives on seasonal conditions.

KMSA remains committed to taking climate information to the last mile, ensuring that forecasts are understood, discussed with communities and translated into timely actions that help protect lives, livelihoods and resources.

KMSA Strengthens National Preparedness Ahead of the OND 2026 Rains.

The Kenya Meteorological Services Authority (KMSA) continues to play a critical role in strengthening national preparedness as the country approaches the October–December (OND) 2026 rainfall season under evolving El Niño conditions.

The KMSA Director participated in a multi-agency preparedness meeting chaired by H.E. Deputy President Prof.

in Karen, Nairobi, bringing together key government agencies and partners to strengthen coordination, preparedness and response measures.

As the country prepares for the OND season, will continue providing timely, science-based weather and climate information, forecasts, advisories and early warnings to support preparedness, early action and informed decision-making at national, county and community levels.

7-Day Rainfall Outlook (22–28 September 2026):

Rainfall is expected over several parts of the country, especially over the Coast, North Eastern, Western, Central and parts of the Rift Valley regions.

Counties expected to experience rainfall include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Makueni, Narok, Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Kisumu, Migori, Nakuru, Nandi, Nyamira, Siaya, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu and Vihiga, among other localized areas.

Daytime (maximum) average temperatures of more than 30°C are expected several counties including Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit & Turkana

Night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be less than 10°C in some parts of Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Narok, Taita/Taveta and Kajiado Counties
