The Shangilia Water Project in Kamagut Ward, Turbo Sub-County, was handed over to the contractor on Monday, marking a significant step towards improving access to clean, safe and reliable water in the area.

The project is among more than 60 water projects being implemented across Uasin Gishu County during the current financial year, as the county government continues to expand water infrastructure and improve service delivery.

The project will draw its water from a borehole and will involve the construction of intake works and a distribution network to serve residents and institutions within the area.

County Engineer in charge, Eng. Benadys Chelagat, assured residents that the project would be implemented to the required standards. He said the county engineering team would conduct regular site visits to monitor progress and ensure that the works are executed according to specifications and within the required timelines.

Upon completion, the project will benefit Symbayos Kaibeiyo Primary School as well as the surrounding community, providing much-needed access to a dependable water supply.

The project underscores Nguzo 7's commitment to fast-tracking service delivery and actualizing the โ€œMache Biko Bekoโ€ campaign, aimed at ensuring that residents of Uasin Gishu County have access to clean, safe and reliable water.

More than 1,000 farmers have turned up for a soil health and soil organic carbon training jointly organised by VIBO, KALRO and the County Government of Uasin Gishu, highlighting growing interest in soil testing, improved soil fertility management and emerging carbon-credit opportunities.

The training brought together over 1,000 farmers and more than 50 County agricultural extension officers, led by Director Agriculture, Mr. Reuben Seroney. The sessions focused on soil health, soil sampling, soil testing and soil organic carbon.

Farmers welcomed the initiative, saying they have been looking for an opportunity to have their soils properly tested and understand the condition of their farms, including concerns around soil acidity and declining fertility.

Mr. Seroney said the initiative complements the Governor Jonathan Bii administrationโ€™s investment in climate-smart agriculture, including the provision of machinery such as chisel ploughs, which support improved soil management and conservation agriculture.

He encouraged farmers to embrace regular soil testing, balanced fertiliser application and climate-smart farming practices to improve soil health, productivity and resilience.

The Director also urged farmers to take advantage of the available rains by planting food crops early, noting that the county experienced inadequate and poorly distributed rainfall that affected maize production in the previous season.

He called on farmers to diversify their enterprises and adopt climate-smart practices that can help safeguard food security amid changing weather patterns.

The training also introduced farmers and extension officers to the potential of soil organic carbon and carbon-credit initiatives, which can reward sustainable farming practices that increase carbon storage in agricultural soils.

Healthy soils, climate-smart farming and timely planting are key to strengthening food security and improving farmersโ€™ livelihoods in Uasin Gishu County.

Residents of Segero/Barsombe Ward in Soy Sub-County are set to benefit from improved access to clean and reliable water following the handover of four water projects to the contractor on Thursday.

The projects: Chelabal Water Project, Emkwen Water Project, AIC Segero Primary Water Project and Tekeiyat Water Project, mark a major milestone in the implementation of Nguzo Number 7, which seeks to actualize the Mache Biko Beko campaign aimed at ensuring residents across Uasin Gishu County have access to clean and reliable water.

The projects are expected to commence shortly, beginning with Phase One intake works, followed by the distribution phase.

The development has brought relief and excitement to residents, who have had to walk long distances for years in search of water.

One of the beneficiaries, Mama Mary, expressed her joy over the project, saying, โ€œNimefurahi sana. Nimebeba maji kwa miaka mingi kwa umbali mrefu sana mpaka mgongo ukawa unanisumbua. Sasa karibu nitakuwa nachota maji mlangoni kwangu.โ€

The handover exercise was overseen by the area MCA, Nathan Malamoch, who urged residents to make the most of the water once the projects are completed. He encouraged them to venture into agricultural activities as a way of improving household incomes and their overall living standards.
