This year, the Lewa Safari Marathon is especially proud to have Safaricom as Co-Lead Partner. Your support goes beyond the race, helping connect people to the event in real time and amplifying the stories of conservation and community that make Lewa so special.

Safaricom has long been part of Kenya’s transformation journey, and here at Lewa, that means helping more people experience, share, and understand the impact this race has, both for wildlife and for the communities that call this landscape home.

It’s more than a run. It’s a shared experience, a celebration of wild places, and a reminder that every step on those trails helps protect something bigger than all of us. 🏃🏾‍♂️🌿

When you toe the starting line at the Lewa Safari Marathon, you are taking on one of the toughest tracks on earth. The course winds through rugged terrain at an average altitude of 6,000 ft, where the air is thin, the ground is unforgiving, and the wildlife watching from the bush is entirely real.

Crossing this finish line is a definitive bucket-list achievement and a personal victory, but your performance powers a purposeful partnership that goes even deeper. Every ounce of effort on the track translates into real change off the course, in the communities that surround it.

Marathon proceeds directly fuel the Lewa Education Programme, reaching 28 government schools across Laikipia, Meru, and Isiolo counties. Your footsteps fund water tanks, classroom repairs, and essential supplies, while providing critical salary support to retain educators in some of northern Kenya’s most remote classrooms.

Run a legendary race. Leave a lasting impact.

193 pancake tortoises were recorded during the 2026 wildlife census across our landscape.

This data strengthens understanding of population trends, distribution and habitat use, key threats, and the effectiveness of ongoing conservation actions.

Our insights directly support Kenya’s National Recovery and Conservation Action Plan for the Pancake Tortoise (2025–2035), guiding long-term protection and management of the species.

7 reasons why the ostrich is one of the most fascinating creatures on the planet:

1. Standing up to 2.7 metres tall and weighing as much as 130 kilograms, it is the largest and heaviest bird on Earth. Flight is completely out of the question.

2. If you thought a jumbo chicken egg was impressive, try an ostrich egg. Weighing in at 1.4 kilograms, a single egg is equivalent to about 25 chicken eggs.

3. They can sprint at a staggering 69 kilometres per hour (43 mph), making them the fastest two-legged animal on Earth.

4: Ostriches belong to an ancient group of flightless birds called ratites, making them cousins to emus, cassowaries, and kiwis.

5. Big Eyes, Small Brains: Their eyes are 5 centimetres wide, which is larger than any other land animal and bigger than their brains.

6. Instead of the usual three or four toes, they have just two. This rare adaptation helps them glide across rough terrain.

7. Science recognises two distinct species: the common ostrich and the Somali ostrich. Because our region is a vibrant ecological crossroads, we get to witness some wonderful overlaps. According to our latest wildlife surveys across the Lewa-Borana Landscape, Ngare Ndare Forest, and the Mount Kenya Elephant Corridor, this incredible ecosystem is currently home to 101 Somali ostriches and 1 lone, majestic Masai ostrich.

Lewa was well represented at the Mater Heart Run 2026 in Nairobi! ❤️🏃‍♂️

This year's theme, "Touch a Child's Heart," says it all. Funds raised go towards heart treatment for children who need it most.

It was great to be part of a community coming together for such a worthy cause. Lewa remains committed to supporting initiatives that improve lives and expand healthcare access for all.

Lewa Conservancy. Mount Kenya. A landscape where biodiversity still holds.

When natural systems break down, the risk of zoonotic disease spills into human populations. Protecting wild landscapes like this is one of the most direct public health investments we can make.

This year’s theme for , “Acting Locally for Global Impact”, places responsibility where it belongs. Not at a summit. Not in a policy document. Here. On the ground. In our hands.

What local action are you taking for biodiversity in 2026?

Today, we pay tribute to Ruby, our beloved bloodhound, as she approaches a well-earned retirement after years of dedicated service as a member of our anti-poaching team.

The eight-year-old was trained in South Africa at Tracking & Conservation Ltd and has been an invaluable member of our conservation and security efforts since joining us through the generosity of a donor.

Ruby is one of the most warm-natured dogs you could ever hope to meet, and her record of service speaks for itself: helping locate a missing child, assisting in the search for a lost elder in Ngare Ndare Forest, and supporting anti-poaching and crime prevention operations across our landscape.

We honour Ruby for her loyalty, her skill, and the lasting mark she has left in protecting both people and wildlife. She has earned every moment of the rest that lies ahead.

In the remote community of Leparua in Isiolo County, accessing healthcare once meant long journeys on rough roads, high transport costs, lost income, and significant strain on already vulnerable households.

With support from the Lewa Safari Marathon, healthcare services across Leparua and other communities neighbouring Lewa, including Ngare Ndare, Ntirimiti, and Manyangalo, have been significantly strengthened. Clinics in these areas now benefit from essential medical supplies, upgraded infrastructure, staff housing repairs, and strengthened regulatory compliance.

This support has also enabled mobile outreach programmes to expand their reach, bringing outpatient care and preventive health education closer to multiple communities at once.

As a result, healthcare delivery across the wider region is becoming more accessible, coordinated, and resilient, steadily shifting from reactive treatment toward prevention and long-term wellbeing.

On Global Big Day 2026, birders across the globe came together and shattered records, documenting more than 8,000 bird species within a single 24-hour period.

Kenya ranked 7th worldwide and claimed the top spot across the entire African continent, cementing its place as one of the planet's premier birding destinations.

Closer to home, we are proud to share that Lewa Wildlife Conservancy placed 1st on the Species Leaders list, with 245 species documented across our landscape. A reflection of the extraordinary birdlife thriving here and the dedicated work of every ranger, researcher, and community member who helps make it possible.
