Selenkay Conservancy

Selenkay Conservancy Selenkay Conservancy is in the same eco-system as Amboseli National Park and is on 13,000 acres of land within the community-owned Eselenkei Group Ranch.

Selenkay Conservancy shares the same eco-system as Amboseli National Park and is established on land within the community-owned Eselenkei Group Ranch leased from the local Maasai by Gamewatchers Safaris with the aim of protecting the wildlife habitat and encouraging wildlife conservation as an alternative land use for the local population to earn a living. Migrating species from Amboseli previousl

y killed or driven off land set aside for farming are now able to make the conservancy their home. Recent years have witnessed a significant increase in wildlife numbers with elephants returning to make the land their own after a 20 year absence. Roads into the very heart of Selenkay Conservancy have been created and a single camp, the Porini Amboseli Camp was established 17 years ago. The camp's remote location off the beaten tourist track means that the local wildlife is not subjected to large numbers of tourist vehicles and therefore behaves in its natural manner. Visitors to the camp (a maximum of only 18 at any given time) benefit from the knowledge and experience of the Maasai employed as guides, trackers and camp staff and from an environment still in its wild and unspoilt state.

Protecting the wild isn't a skill you learn once. Last week, 24 of our Selenkay Conservancy rangers wrapped up two weeks of refresher training โ€” sharpening drill and discipline, search and arrest procedures, GPS navigation, radio communication, report writing, plus mental health and physical fitness.

Led by Fidelius Michira, Director of Elite Rangers Training, the graduation drew Selenkay Group Ranch leaders, community elders, and Kenya Wildlife Service to celebrate a team that's been quietly on patrol all along.

Threats evolve. Tactics evolve. Our rangers have to keep pace โ€” and that's exactly what this training is for.

Every night at a Porini Camp helps fund it. Come meet the land, and the people who never stop training to protect it. ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://www.porini.com/

Today, we celebrate one of Africaโ€™s most iconic animals โ€” but this year, that celebration comes with a sobering reminder of just how much elephants still need our protection.

In recent weeks, the Amboseli ecosystem has lost 16 elephants, including mainly adult females and calves. The deaths occurred between June 24 and July 31, with preliminary laboratory analysis pointing to cyanide poisoning as the probable cause in the cases examined. Investigations are ongoing to establish exactly how the elephants were exposed, with authorities examining possible contamination of crops, water, soil and forage.

The incident highlights a much bigger challenge: elephants do not recognise the boundaries we draw on maps.

Only around 40% of elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem are known to use Amboseli National Park during the dry season, meaning many spend part of their lives outside protected areas, sharing the landscape with farms, livestock and communities.

That is why elephant conservation is also about protecting habitat, creating safe corridors, reducing human-elephant conflict and finding ways for people and wildlife to coexist.

At Gamewatchers Safaris, we believe that tourism can play a role in making that coexistence possible โ€” when wildlife, communities and conservation are at the heart of the model.

The boots are on the ground.

Our Selenkay Wildlife Defenders are officially in training, and it's going exactly as planned. Early starts, real terrain, real skills. This isn't a classroom exercise, it's the groundwork for the people who'll be walking this land long after the training ends.

And the timing couldn't be better, these Defenders will be stepping into the field right as we celebrate the rangers who came before them this World Ranger Day. ๐Ÿ‘

More updates as training progresses. This is only the beginning. ๐ŸŒ

| The Hidden Cost of Keeping Water Flowing for Wildlife

A waterhole is more than a place to drink. During the dry season, it is a lifeline.

Recently at Porini Amboseli Camp, elephants damaged the pump supplying water to the waterhole. The pump was repaired, but the very next morning, the elephants damaged it again.

Another repair is now underway. The current repair involves approximately 20 km of travel by a plumber, new 50mm PPR pipes and fittings, and is expected to cost KES 22,300 (approximately USD 172).

It is a reminder that keeping water flowing for wildlife is not a one-time effort. It requires constant attention, resources, and a willingness to respond whenever nature presents a new challenge.

The cost of conservation is not always measured in large projects or headline-making initiatives. Sometimes, it is the cost of a plumber travelling 20 km, new pipes and fittings, and the repeated effort to restore a water supply that an entire herd depends on.

These are the quiet, often unseen investments that help keep wildlife safe and water within reach when it matters most.

Because protecting wildlife also means protecting the resources they depend on.

Experience the wild at Porini Amboseli Camp, where every stay helps support the conservation of the landscapes and wildlife that make this place so special.

Quick question: if you saw an elephant with tusks, would you assume it's a boy?
Yeah. Everyone does. Turns out that's only half true.
Here in Kenya, our African elephants play it fair โ€” both males AND females rock tusks. No gender bias here, ladies are just as armed and dangerous (in the best way).

But fly over to Asia, and the rules flip. Male Asian elephants? Often tuskers. Female Asian elephants? Usually tuskless, or rocking tiny "tushes" you'd need a magnifying glass to spot.

Our guide Sakimba Mayiani broke this down for us on a recent drive โ€” and honestly, we've been telling people wrong for years.

So next time someone tells you "tusks = boy elephant" โ€” you can politely inform them that Mama Elephant would like a word.

๐Ÿ“ Come see the tusked queens of Selenkay Conservancy yourself.

Period poverty is the intersection of poverty, stigma, and inadequate infrastructure that prevents girls and women from managing their periods safely and with dignity โ€” and in Kenya, it's a widespread reality.

A 2024 USAID report found that 65% of the 27 million women in Kenya cannot afford the basic requirements to manage their periods, and roughly one million girls miss school every month as a result. Without access to proper products, many turn to unsafe alternatives โ€” a Heart Education/P&G survey found 42% of Kenyan schoolgirls have never used a sanitary pad, relying instead on rags or blankets that can cause infections.

The consequences ripple further: girls affected by period poverty also face higher risk of early marriage and gender-based violence โ€” showing how access to a basic product can shape a girl's whole path.

That's why, through our partnership with PadMad Kenya and Wildlife Habitat Trust, we supported menstrual health outreach at Lenkisem Secondary School and Olanti Primary School, reaching 311 students and distributing 186 reusable kits โ€” helping keep girls in school, with dignity, sustainably.
