Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA) today joined national and regional leaders at Tebe Grounds, Kapyego Ward in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, for the official launch of the Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony (CHERISH) initiative, held during the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 celebrations.
The Cherangany Hills ecosystem remains one of Kenya’s most vital water towers, covering approximately 414,928 hectares across Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, and Uasin Gishu counties. It comprises 22 gazetted forests spanning nearly 100,000 hectares and feeds more than 22 major rivers that support millions of people across the Rift Valley and beyond, including waters flowing into Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana basins.
Over the years, unregulated human activities have led to significant environmental degradation, contributing to increased vulnerability to disasters such as landslides, including the tragic Chesongoch incident and other recurring events in the region.
To address these challenges, stakeholders have launched a KSh 15 billion, ten-year programme dubbed the Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony (CHERISH). The community-driven initiative seeks to restore degraded landscapes through tree growing, sustainable land use practices, and strengthened community participation in conservation, in line with the national 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme.
The event was presided over by Deputy President H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, with Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen serving as patron of the initiative, underscoring government commitment to protecting Kenya’s critical water towers.
LVNWWDA team was led by Chairman, Hon John imoite ,Board Directors, Abraham Cheruiyot,Dr Daniel Achach, Rev Douglas Beru,Miriam Obura ,CEO Mr Joel Wamalwa and Deputy Director corporate communications Mr Tom Musungu, who joined participants in witnessing the official launch of the programme.
The CHERISH initiative brings together national and county governments, development partners, environmental agencies, youth groups, and local communities in a unified effort to restore the Cherangany Hills ecosystem and promote sustainable livelihoods and environmental resilience.
