LVNWWDA Joins National Leaders in Launch of CHERISH Initiative to Restore Cherangany Hills Ecosystem.

Date: 22nd May, 2026
Elgeyo-Marakwet

Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA) today joined national and regional leaders at Tebe Grounds, Kapyego Ward in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, for the official launch of the Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony (CHERISH) initiative, held during the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 celebrations.

The Cherangany Hills ecosystem remains one of Kenya’s most vital water towers, covering approximately 414,928 hectares across Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, and Uasin Gishu counties. It comprises 22 gazetted forests spanning nearly 100,000 hectares and feeds more than 22 major rivers that support millions of people across the Rift Valley and beyond, including waters flowing into Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana basins.

Over the years, unregulated human activities have led to significant environmental degradation, contributing to increased vulnerability to disasters such as landslides, including the tragic Chesongoch incident and other recurring events in the region.

To address these challenges, stakeholders have launched a KSh 15 billion, ten-year programme dubbed the Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony (CHERISH). The community-driven initiative seeks to restore degraded landscapes through tree growing, sustainable land use practices, and strengthened community participation in conservation, in line with the national 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme.

The event was presided over by Deputy President H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, with Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen serving as patron of the initiative, underscoring government commitment to protecting Kenya’s critical water towers.

LVNWWDA team was led by Chairman, Hon John imoite ,Board Directors, Abraham Cheruiyot,Dr Daniel Achach, Rev Douglas Beru,Miriam Obura ,CEO Mr Joel Wamalwa and Deputy Director corporate communications Mr Tom Musungu, who joined participants in witnessing the official launch of the programme.

The CHERISH initiative brings together national and county governments, development partners, environmental agencies, youth groups, and local communities in a unified effort to restore the Cherangany Hills ecosystem and promote sustainable livelihoods and environmental resilience.

PRESENTATION OF ZIWA LITTLE NZOIA WATER PROJECT DETAILED DESIGNS

DATE: 12Th May, 2026
Nairobi

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Water and Sanitation, Julius Korir today chaired a high-level meeting at Maji House, Nairobi, on the presentation of draft designs for the Ziwa–Little Nzoia Water Supply Project.

The meeting brought together officials from Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency led by Chief Executive Officer, Joel Wamalwa, alongside the project consultant team from Design Master Plan led by Managing Director Eng. Benard Oloo.

The proposed project seeks to provide safe and reliable potable water to residents of Soy, Moiben, Likuyani and Tongaren constituencies, benefiting communities across Uasin Gishu, Bungoma and Kakamega counties.

During the presentation, the consultant outlined the phased project implementation plan covering current, initial, future and ultimate demand projections up to the year 2050. The designs propose four major water supply systems namely; Chepkaitit System, Nzoia System, Moiben System and Ziwa Dam 3 System.

Among the proposed project components include a new intake along River Nzoia, expansion of gravity-based transmission networks, and construction of new water treatment plants aimed at enhancing access to clean water across the target regions.

The estimated total cost of the project stands at approximately KSh 4.90 Billion.
The meeting also discussed key emerging issues from previous engagements, including concerns raised by North Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency regarding the feasibility of the Chepkaitit abstraction source, proposed expansion of the Chebara Scheme, and increasing abstraction demands on Ziwa Dams by other agencies.

Chief Executive Officer of North Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency, Edwin Rotich, attended the meeting where his concerns on the project were successfully addressed.

CEO Joel Wamalwa was accompanied by Director Infrastructure Planning and Design, Eng. George Odede, Deputy Director Environment and Social Safeguards, Ibrahim Oluoch and Assistant Engineer, Vincent Otieno.
