H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, OGW, today disbursed KSh.5 million through the Social Protection Grants Programme to 100 groups across all five wards of Matungu Sub-County.

The grants are supporting women, youth, persons with disabilities and widows to strengthen livelihoods, grow enterprises and improve household incomes. Each of the five wards has received KSh.1 million to support 20 groups, with every group receiving KSh.50,000.

Speaking during the disbursement, Governor Barasa said the programme is part of his administration’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities and supporting vulnerable groups to improve their livelihoods.

The Matungu allocation is part of the wider KSh.60 million Social Protection Grants Programme, which is supporting 1,200 groups across all 60 wards of Kakamega County, comprising 540 women’s groups, 240 youth groups, 300 widows’ groups and 120 groups of persons living with disabilities.

Governor Barasa urged the beneficiaries to use the grants prudently, investing in viable businesses and sustainable income-generating activities that would strengthen their livelihoods, increase household incomes and improve their economic wellbeing.

The Social Protection Grants Programme complements other empowerment initiatives implemented by the County Government, including support through the Kakamega Microfinance Corporation, which has disbursed more than KSh.140 million over the past four years.The countywide rollout of the Social Protection Grants Programme continues, with Lugari Sub-County next in line to receive its allocation.

The Governor was accompanied by MCAs Led by Speaker Rt. Hon. James Namatsi, Members of the County Executive Committee led by CECM for Social Services CPA Jackline Masicha, County and National Governments officials and local leaders.

GOVERNOR BARASA GRACES INAUGURAL GUMZO LA UCHUMI MASHINANI FORUM IN KAKAMEGA.

Thursday, 3 September 2026.

H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, OGW, today graced the inaugural Gumzo la Uchumi Mashinani Muslim Public Participation Forum at Bukhungu Stadium, presided over by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Economic Planning, Dr. Boniface Makokha.

The forum brought together Muslim leaders and stakeholders from Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties for dialogue on inclusive economic growth and development in the Western region.

Governor Barasa said his administration has consistently embraced inclusivity in all its initiatives and opportunities, guided by the belief that development must reach and benefit all residents.

He noted that the forum provided an important platform for Muslim leaders, women, youth, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders to engage on economic opportunities and how communities can participate more meaningfully in development.

The event also marked the launch of the Western Muslim SACCO, with Governor Barasa noting that his administration contributed to its seed capital to support its establishment and growth.

Also in attendance were Malava MP Hon. David Ndakwa, the Muslim leadership from the region coordinated by the National Chairman of Imams Sheikh Abdallah Ateka, and other national and county leaders.

GOVERNOR BARASA PRESIDES OVER CABINET MEETING TO APPROVE 2026/2027 DEVELOPMENT PLAN AND KEY POLICIES

Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

H.E. Governor Dr. Fernandes Barasa today presided over a Cabinet meeting to approve the Annual Development Plan (ADP) for the 2026/2027 financial year and other key County policies.

The Cabinet considered progress in the implementation of the County Government’s development programmes, assessed achievements against set targets and identified areas requiring greater attention. The deliberations focused on strengthening implementation, coordination and accountability across departments to ensure that planned programmes and projects deliver the intended results.

Governor Barasa directed the County Executive to enhance performance, ensure timely implementation and strengthen service delivery. He set clear expectations for the work ahead, emphasising the need to accelerate the County’s development agenda, address emerging priorities and ensure that public resources deliver tangible benefits to the people of Kakamega County.

COUNTY, KWTRP TO PARTNER IN RESEARCH ON USE OF RESIDUAL SAMPLES

September 2, 2026

The County Government of Kakamega, through the Department of Health Services, is set to partner with the Kenya Medical Research Institute Wellcome Trust Research Programme Kilifi (KWTRP) to conduct research aimed at improving patient health outcomes and strengthening disease surveillance.

The research will analyse 1,375 residual samples over one year, with additional testing considered to identify diseases. The findings will support disease surveillance, health planning and resource allocation.

KWTRP Project Coordinator, Dr. Collins Owino, noted that KEMRI will deploy an additional staff member to the laboratory department at Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCGTRH) to work full-time and enhance service delivery.

County Research Coordinator, Mr. Sudi Galo, said the findings will help map disease patterns and guide health strategies aimed at improving the quality of healthcare, in line with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s healthcare agenda.

Present were KCGTRH Medical Superintendent, Dr. Christian Lamba, and County Nursing Officer, Mrs. Alice Harambee.

KAKAMEGA COUNTY STRENGTHENS COLLABORATION WITH NATIONAL GOVERNMENT ON WATER DEVELOPMENT

Today, H.E. Governor Dr. Fernandes Barasa hosted the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, at the County Headquarters.

The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between the two levels of Government to accelerate water connectivity to more households and communities across Kakamega County.

The partnership will support the realisation of the Governor’s Amatsi Khumuliango agenda, bringing clean and reliable water closer to the people and advancing last-mile water connectivity in Kakamega County.

A total of 120 groups in Shinyalu Sub-County today received KSh.6 million in Social Protection Grants under a programme commissioned by H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, OGW, to strengthen livelihoods and expand economic opportunities.

Speaking at St. Gonzaga Grounds, Governor Barasa handed over KSh.1 million to beneficiary groups in each of the six wards of Shinyalu Sub-County: Isukha South, Isukha North, Isukha Central, Isukha East, Isukha West and Murhanda. The beneficiaries include women, youth, persons with disabilities, widows and other vulnerable members of the community.

Shinyalu is the fifth Sub-County to benefit from the programme, bringing the total amount disbursed so far to KSh.24 million. The KSh.60 million countywide programme will support 1,200 groups equitably.

Governor Barasa urged the beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly by investing in viable income-generating ventures that can create employment, strengthen household incomes and improve their overall economic wellbeing.

The Governor also highlighted ongoing investments in Shinyalu, covering healthcare, water, roads, bridges and education, among them the near-completion Shamakhubu Level IV Hospital and the Mukulusu Water Project.

ECDE infrastructure is also being expanded across all the six wards, with ECDE Centres at Shiatsala, Lukala, Lirhanda, Shivakala, Irenyi, Vikoshe, St. Kizito Shivungo, Irenji, Ivona and Mugomari. These investments are improving services and creating opportunities while giving the children of Shinyalu a stronger foundation for the future.

Governor Barasa was accompanied by MCAs led by the County Assembly's Deputy Speaker and also MCA for Isukha East Ward Hon. Benard Sh*tiabayi, Members of the County Executive led by CECM for Social Services CPA Jackline Masicha, and other leaders.

RENOVATION AND EXPANSION OF BUNGASI AND MUSANDA DISPENSARIES ON COURSE.

The County Government of Kakamega, through the Department of Public Works, has today inspected the ongoing construction and renovation works at Musanda and Bungasi Health Dispensaries in Mumias West Sub-County.

At Musanda Dispensary, the County Government is expanding the facility through the construction of a new dispensary block, while renovating the existing facility to create additional space and improve service delivery.

Bungasi Dispensary, on the other hand, is undergoing a major facelift through comprehensive renovation and expansion of the existing dispensary block. The works also include the renovation of the staff quarters and laboratory block, which had fallen into a dilapidated state.

Leading the inspection exercise, Chief Officer for Public Works, Mr. Pascal Were, noted that the expansion and renovation of the two facilities will enhance access to quality healthcare services and contribute to the achievement of Governor Fernandes Barasa’s quality healthcare pillar for residents of Kakamega County.

Present during the inspection were Musanda Ward MCA, Mr. Joseph Omusinde; Director of Public Works, Eng. Jared Salano; and Mumias West Sub-County Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Joel Aseka.
