INSTALLING A MAENDELEO JIKO IN THE KITCHEN Small window for ventilation One of the advantages of the Maendeleo Jiko is that it can be used in the same way as the traditional three stone fire. The liner can often be installed in the place where the traditional fireplace was in the kitchen. However, for greatest efficiency the door of the jiko should face the door of the kitchen. It is also good to have ventilation such as a small window behind the stove. It is best to install two liners at a time and to use it as the only fireplace. The surround is made from a clay, soil and ash mixture, reinforced with stones. These are materials already used in many local buildings. Since it will be round the fire and therefore get hot, it is important to get the right mixture in order to stop it cracking. This can be found from local experience.Liners available please contact me +254700864580.

KENYA FREEEDOM FROM HUNGER
COUNCIL (KFFHC) in partnership with
GORTA (FREEDOM FROM HUNGER
COUNCIL OF IRELAND) AND SH*TARI
STOVE FOR LIFE has initiated
community energy saving projects to help conserve and minimise the impact of
household energy needs on forest cover.
In order to increase and conserve forest
cover, KFFHC implements this project at
two levels: the first level involves a
training where four farmer groups from the four villages in ESH*TARI are trained
on conservation measures with the bias
on the use of energy saving Jikos; the
second level is by donating energy
saving jikos and constructing a double
Maendeleo Jiko for each of the four farmer groups for demonstration. To
ensure multiplier effect, the farmer
group’s members taken through training
have been given instruction to become
trainers to propagate the exercise.
