Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, outlined a series of major development projects being implemented by the National Government in Tharaka Nithi County during a visit to Kaanwa in Chuka Igambang'ombe Constituency.
Speaking after inspecting ongoing works in the constituency, the Deputy President revealed that road construction projects covering 412 kilometers are underway at a cost of KSh21 billion. He added that the Nithi Bridge project will cost KSh7 billion, while rural electrification initiatives valued at KSh1 billion are also in progress across the county.
Kindiki further noted that housing and market infrastructure are key priorities, with Affordable Housing, fresh produce markets, and student accommodation projects collectively costing KSh7 billion currently being implemented.
On healthcare, the Deputy President said Taifa Care has recorded significant uptake in the region, placing Tharaka Nithi among the top five counties in registration. He disclosed that about 70 percent of residents have already enrolled in the programme, which has so far registered over 30.2 million Kenyans nationwide—up from the 7 million previously covered under the now-defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund.
He emphasized that the programme is aimed at shielding Kenyans from high medical costs that often force families to sell property or rely on public fundraisers to access treatment.
Following the project inspections, Kindiki held a public sensitization forum at Kaanwa Trading Centre, where he updated residents on ongoing government programmes and their expected benefits to the local community.
The Deputy President was accompanied by Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, Deputy Governor Nyaga Muisiraeli, Woman Representative Susan Ngugi, Members of Parliament Patrick Munene and Kareke Mbiuki, County Assembly Speaker John Mbabu, Members of the County Assembly, and other local leaders.
