Justice cannot be sweet only when your enemy is on the stand.
You do not choose what's right or wrong depending on which side of the line you stand.
Marco Rubio, Donald J. Trump and the White House must leave the International Criminal Court - ICC alone.
International law and impartial arbitration exist for a reason. They are not principles to be shifted whenever they become inconvenient to the powerful. Justice, truth, and the rule of law are enduring foundations of civilized society, and institutions such as the ICC exist to uphold them.
It is true that innocent men, women, and children have lost their lives in Yemen, Gaza, Iran, Ukraine, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is equally true that grave violations have been committed by multiple parties across these conflicts. The ICC's purpose, regardless of political opinion, is to determine whether international law has been violated, identify those responsible, and, where jurisdiction allows and evidence supports it, hold them accountable. It is only through the violation of this principle - not the manner in which judges are appointed - should the ICC be questioned.
Only through consistent accountability can both powerful and weaker nations have confidence that justice is not reserved for the strong alone. That is the foundation of lasting peace.
The alternative is a world where might determines right. History repeatedly demonstrates that military strength alone does not guarantee security or legitimacy. When the rule of law is abandoned, chaos inevitably follows, and sooner or later, even the most powerful discover that no nation or leader is beyond the consequences of a lawless world.
