Peace Corps Kenya

Peace Corps Kenya In 1961, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship

If you are inspired by global impact that is hands-on, grassroots-driven, and lasting, get to know us. The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devo

ted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, more than 225,000 Americans of all ages have responded to Kennedy’s call to serve and have helped communities in 141 countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and contributing to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities. Volunteers in Kenya work with their communities on projects in education and health. During their service in Kenya, Volunteers learn to speak the local languages, including Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, Kalenjin, Kikuyu, Luo and Luyha and serve in the Western Region of the country. The Kisui Youth Empowerment Center is officially launched!
The Acting Peace Corps Kenya Country Director and Peace Corps staff joined community leaders, youth, and partners to celebrate this community-led achievement in Kisui with PCV Alayna. The project was made possible through a Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP) grant and strong collaboration with the local community to revitalize a safer, more empowering space for young people. 🌍🤝
Together, Kisui is investing in brighter futures for youth. 🇰🇪💫

Over the April school break, PCV Sadie hosted a science camp for a group of motivated secondary school students. Through engaging and hands-on activities, Sadie showed her students some real-world applications of what they learn in the classroom. Students discovered chemical properties in “invisible ink”, classified different plants around the school, and built marble roller coasters.

Today, Peace Corps Kenya Staff, Volunteers and Counterparts are wearing denim to stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault and to protest the harmful myth that clothing ever excuses violence. Clothes do not cause sexual violence, people do. Raise your voices and join us in challenging victim-blaming and supporting a culture of consent.

PCV Margaret, along with her counterparts from the partner organisation Futures Infinite hosted a coding camp for students in Junior and Senior Secondary School. The students learned how to make their own projects in Scratch, a beginner-friendly coding platform, and were introduced to Python through Raspberry Pi Pico kits. As the education sector becomes increasingly digital, it is important to give students a space to explore computers and learn how they work.
