Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency today joined other water institutions from across East Africa in commemorating the inaugural Lake Victoria Day celebrations held in Mwanza, United Republic of Tanzania.

The Agency’s Chairman, Dan Omino, and CEO, Jackline Kemunto, participated in the event, which was officiated by the Prime Minister of Tanzania, Mwigulu Nchemba.

During a gala dinner held on 20th May 2026, the Agency was honoured with an award in recognition of its outstanding dedication, creativity, and hard work in sludge and water management. The award underscored the Agency’s continued commitment to sustainable water and sanitation solutions within the Lake Victoria Basin region.

Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency is participating in the inaugural commemoration of the Lake Victoria Day in Mwanza, Tanzania. The event has been organised by the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC). The team from the Agency is led by the Chairman, Dan Omino, OGW, and CEO, Jackline Kemunto.

The celebrations involve a series of activities that commenced on Monday, 18th May 2026, bringing together multi-sectoral stakeholders from the East African Community Partner States operating within the Lake Victoria Basin.

The engagements are aimed at reviewing the current status of the Basin, undertaking exhibitions to showcase innovations, and sharing achievements and project interventions implemented by LVBC and its partners. Currently, Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency is implementing IWRM project in Kisumu on behalf of LVBC.

Today, the State of the Basin Report 2025 was officially launched during the event.

The Lake Victoria Day celebrations will henceforth be commemorated every 21st of May. This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme: “Shared Waters, Shared Future: Uniting for a Sustainable Lake Victoria Basin.

Preparations for the Agency to assume operational responsibility for the Itare Water Supply Scheme under the bulk water supply system, are at an advanced stage.
In line with this progress, the Agency today hosted a consultative meeting with the leadership of the County Government of Kericho, led by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Hon. Philemon Kurgat, alongside representatives from Kericho Water and Sanitation Company Ltd (KEWASCO). The meeting provided a critical platform for engagement on the Bulk Water Supply Agreement, and the modalities for its effective implementation.
The session was chaired by the LVSWWDA Chairman, Mr. Dan Omino, OGW, and the Agency’s CEO, Ms. Jackline Kemunto, who underscored the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in ensuring the successful operationalization of the scheme.
Key issues deliberated upon included; a status update on the Bulk Water Supply Agreement and a comprehensive review of outstanding matters. Among the issues discussed were inter-WSP arrears between KEWASCO and Bomet Water and Sanitation Company Ltd (BOMWASCO), outstanding Kenya Power (KPLC) bills associated with the scheme, and the County Government’s perspective on its financial obligations. The meeting also explored practical and sustainable approaches to resolving these pending issues to pave the way for a smooth transition and long-term viability of the project.

The President of the Republic of Kenya, His Excellency William Samoei Ruto, PhD., CGH, today commissioned the Kisii Water Supply and Sanitation Project – Last Mile Connectivity implemented by the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency.

The project entails the rehabilitation and improvement of water supply reticulation networks within Kisii Town and its neighborhood, aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing water losses, and expanding service coverage to underserved areas.

The Last Mile Connectivity project is financed by the Government of Germany through KfW Development Bank. The project was designed to meet both current and future demand. The Kisii Water Supply and Sanitation Project targets present population of approximately 203,000 people, with projections indicating growth to about 293,523 by the year 2050. The project covers an estimated geographical area of 116.10 square kilometres and spans several sub-locations across Kisii and its environs.

Through the modernization and expansion of the water distribution network, the project is expected to significantly improve access to safe and reliable water, enhance public health outcomes, and support socio-economic development in the region. It also underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening urban water systems and ensuring inclusive, sustainable service delivery for all.

President of the Republic of Kenya His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD., CGH today commissioned the Nyamira Water Supply Project and launched Nyamira Last Mile Connectivity Project.
These are two transformative initiatives implemented by the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency.
The President was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Eng. Eric Mugaa, State Department of Water and Sanitation PS Julius Kori, LVSWWDA Chairman Mr. Dan Omino, OGW, LVSWWDA CEO Ms. Jackline Kemunto, Director John Momanyi, Director Dr. Cecilia Ng'etich among other dignitaries.

These projects build on the gains achieved during the 2019 system expansion and are strategically designed to extend treated water services to underserved areas within Nyamira Town, as well as surrounding peri-urban and rural communities. They serve as key service delivery optimization interventions aimed at enhancing access to clean and safe water, improving the reliability of supply, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of water services in the region.

The Nyamira Water Supply Last Mile Connectivity and Improvement Project specifically targets a current population of approximately 61,294 residents, with projections indicating growth to about 81,350 people by the year 2050. The project covers an estimated geographical area of 87.9 square kilometres and spans several sub-locations across Nyamira County.

Collectively, these initiatives mark a significant milestone in advancing equitable access to reliable water services, while fostering socio-economic development and improving the quality of life for communities in Nyamira County.
