The Principal Secretary, Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, today inspected the West Karachuonyo Water Supply Project in Homa Bay County, which is being implemented by the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWWDA).
The LVSWWDA Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Jackline Kemunto, was represented by Senior Manager, Research, Strategy and Performance Management, Ms. Miriam Siwa, Senior Manager, Water Works Services, Eng. Paul Agwanda, and Senior Manager, Corporate Services, Mr. Daniel Owino.
The project is designed to serve a current estimated population of 48,336 people, with the population projected to increase to 91,000 by 2050. Upon full completion, the scheme is expected to provide safe and reliable water to approximately 76,000 residents.
Phase I, which is currently 98% complete, includes the rehabilitation and solarisation of the existing lake intake, construction of a 2.75-kilometre epoxy-coated steel raw water pipeline, installation of 682 solar panels, construction of three storage tanks with capacities of 300,000 litres at Kawiti, 150,000 litres at Sangla, and 100,000 litres at Kandiege, laying of 27.5 kilometres of distribution pipelines, and 500 consumer connections, including connections to five schools.
Phase II, currently at 55% completion, involves the construction of two 300m³ reinforced concrete storage tanks at Wang Got and Osakwe, a 100m³ elevated steel tank at Oriwo, rehabilitation of the 200,000-litre Okiki Amayo Booster Tank, construction of 35 kilometres of pumping and gravity main pipelines, distribution pipelines, ancillary works, consumer connections, and the establishment of water kiosks in Bala, Kandiege, Uhuru, Okiki Amayo, Wang Got, Raruowa and Oriwo markets. The phase will also connect 15 schools to clean water, each equipped with a 10,000-litre water storage tank.
Phase II (Electromechanical Works) has already been contracted but is yet to commence. The works include the supply and installation of seven pumps and solar-powered pumping systems for the raw water pumping station, the clear water pumping system at the water treatment plant, the Okiki Amayo booster station, and rehabilitation of the water treatment plant.
Phase III, whose feasibility study has been completed, proposes the construction of an additional 150,000-litre storage tank, 30 kilometres of distribution pipelines, 10 kilometres of last-mile consumer connection pipelines, installation of 500 water meters, and water connections to 10 public institutions and markets. The phase is estimated to cost KES 165 million.
Once fully implemented, the West Karachuonyo Water Supply Project will significantly improve access to clean and safe water, enhance public health, support education and livelihoods, and contribute to the socio-economic development of West Karachuonyo and its surrounding areas.
