Some days have a rhythm all of their own.

They begin with coffee overlooking the ocean and a little movement on the rooftop while Shela is still waking up. Breakfast lingers a little longer than planned, the afternoon might take you across the water to explore centuries of history, and by evening everyone seems to find their way back together, whether that’s around the table, on the beach or watching the sunset from a dhow.

By the time your head finally finds the pillow, all that’s left to do is fall asleep to the sound of the Indian Ocean outside your window.

It begins in the winding lanes of Shela.

In coral stone walls, warmed by the African sun.

In the quiet clip-clop of donkeys making their daily journey.

In children playing between centuries-old doorways, and neighbours who still know one another by name.

This is one of the last places where Swahili culture isn’t something to visit.

It’s simply a way of life.

And for a little while...
