Today, representatives of the National Programme Coordinating Unit (NPCU) paid a courtesy call to Mr. Steve Kilonzo - Officer in charge of Revival and Marketing of Coffee in Machakos county. This was before the team proceeded to the ground to verify what the participating projects are doing under the revitalization programme.
NPCU, made up of the State Department of Cooperatives, the National Panel of Experts, and Coffee Research Institute (CRI) among other representatives received a brief from Mr. Kilonzo on the state of the three cooperatives from Kathiani, Kangundo and Matungulu, currently taking part in the programme.
The team had the opportunity to meet with H.E. Eng. Francis Maliti - Machakos Deputy governor, who expressed satisfaction with the way the coffee revitalization project was being implemented at the County. He underscored the value of coffee as a cash crop that sustains the livelihood of thousands of households within the county, and indicated that he hoped to see the cash crop revived to it's former glory. He pledged the County Government's support towards this initiative.
Coffee farming remains a very crucial activity in our country's economy. This said, today's engagement comes at a time when the County government of Machakos continues to undertake significant operations to boost coffee production in the region.
