Marsabit Deputy Governor Solomon Gubo, accompanied by Mr. John Kuentle, USAID Deputy Mission Director, officially commissioned a state-of-the-art oxygen plant at the county referral hospital.

Supported by USAID Kenya, this remarkable facility has the capacity to produce over 10 cylinders of oxygen per day, ensuring the availability of this life-saving resource for patients in need.

The event was further elevated with the inauguration of a blood bank, supported by the World Bank. This significant milestone in healthcare was celebrated amidst a colorful gathering at the hospital grounds.

During the event, the Deputy Governor highlighted the commitment of Governor Mohamud Ali towards providing the best healthcare services to the people of Marsabit County. The Deputy Governor mentioned that the county has already installed and operationalized a renal unit, CT Scan, laboratories, and other essential medical facilities.

These investments demonstrate Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali's government dedication to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services, ensuring comprehensive care for the residents.

Health Services CECM Grace Galmo expressed her gratitude, emphasizing that the oxygen plant and blood bank, along with the existing medical equipment, will revolutionize service delivery, enabling the hospital to provide high-quality care locally.

The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. John Kuentle, commended the efforts of the county government and reaffirmed USAID Kenya's commitment to supporting similar similar initiatives that contributes to quality of health services.

With the installation of the oxygen plant and the availability of advanced medical equipment, Marsabit County is taking significant strides towards accessible and quality healthcare.

The induction for Marsabit County Executive Members (CEMs) and Chief Officers (COs) is underway at the Kenya School of Government (KSG). The induction, will equip the newly appointed officials with the necessary knowledge and skills for efficient delivery of the services.

Speaking during the opening session, Marsabit County Governor H.E. Mohamud Ali noted that the officers should now set down and work efficiently to recover the time lost following a court order that suspended the recruitment of the chief officers. However, the order was lifted a month ago, allowing the induction to proceed.

Governor Ali urged the new officers to make the most of the one-week course and familiarize themselves with the do's and don'ts for government officials. He emphasized the importance of discipline within their respective dockets and emphasized the need for seamless service delivery. Proper planning, goal setting, and adherence to the law were highlighted as key elements for effective governance.

“We must have proper planning in each department, set ourselves target and ensure it is delivered. The only favour I expect for you is to serve people well,” said the Governor. The Governor referred the officers to a quote by the Starehe Boys Centre Founder famous statement in which the late Geoffrey Griffin stated that, ‘when given a coffee cup to clean, clean like it has never been cleaned before’.
The Deputy Governor challenged the County Executive Members and Chief Officers to be catalysts for change within their departments and to serve selflessly. Their commitment to the well-being of the people they serve was emphasized.

Chair of the Public Service Board, Ambrose Hargura, echoed the Governor's statements and emphasized that the responsibility for service delivery rests on the shoulders of every government officer. He emphasized the importance of collective effort in achieving the county's goals.

The induction program will cover a range of topics, including Public Service, protocol etiquette, Relationship, Roles and Responsibilities of CECMs and COs, the roles of the County Public Service Board and County Secretary, Communications and Knowledge Management as well as the doctrine of separation of power, among others. These sessions aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the officials and the structures within which they operate.

Marsabit County Integrated Child Policy sensitization workshop for County Executive Committee Members (CECM) kicked off this morning.
Speaking while officially opening the two days’ workshop, Marsabit County Deputy Governor Solomon Gubo noted that the policy will provide critical directions for protections of the child against harmful cultural policies and solidify the gains already achieved.
County Secretary Hussein Tarry Sasura said that there is need for the integrated policy that will be in line with the constitution of Kenya, the relevant international laws to inform the county programs aimed at protecting the child. The policy will facilitate a multi-sectoral and collaborative efforts between different players and non-governmental actors both at the national and county level.
The sentiments were echoed by CECM Gender, Culture and Social Services Jeremy Ledany, who noted that policy will guide implementation of programs as captured in the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), and also refocus the holistic development and protection of children in Marsabit.
The development of the policy is supported by EACHRights, AMREF Health Africa among others and team spearheading the child policy development process from the county government is led by Director Gender AnnaMaria Denge.

Statement on the Outbreak of unknown disease in Kargi, Laisamis Sub-County

The Marsabit County Health Department has received reports of an outbreak of an unknown disease in Kargi, Laisamis sub-county. The department is currently investigating the outbreak and has dispatched a team of health professionals to support the sub-county team. The team consisting of disease surveillance experts and laboratory technologists are already on the ground.

As of the time of this statement, two deaths have been registered at the health facilities, but the department has received unconfirmed reports of other deaths that have occurred within the community. We are deeply concerned about the health and well-being of the residents in Kargi, and indeed the entire county and are working tirelessly to identify the cause of the outbreak.

The County Health Department is working closely with the other health agencies, and all necessary measures are being taken to identify, contain and manage the outbreak. We are urging the community to cooperate with the health personnel who are on the ground as we seek to prevent the spread of the disease and contain the situation. The department has sent additional drugs to the Laisamis sub-county team, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely. We will provide regular updates as new information becomes available.

In the meantime, we encourage residents to take preventative measures such as washing their hands frequently with soap and water, avoiding contact with sick people, and seeking medical attention if they experience any symptoms.

We would like to assure the public that the County Health Department is doing everything in its power to contain and manage the outbreak and safeguard the health of the community.

Marsabit County technical team drawn from difference sectors and partners today started a week-long meeting, to deliberate and draw up the roll out of the Participatory Climate Risk Assessment (PCRA) process, aimed at engaging residence at the ward level in order to identify climate risk and develop sustainable climate resilience actions. The PCRA is the mechanism to assess the risk and impact of climate change in order to design sustainable climate resilience interventions from informed perspective.
As per the Marsabit Climate Change Policy 2019 and Marsabit Climate Change Fund Act 2020, climate risk assessment is essential to enable to identify climate risks, impacts and priority resilience options to build local capacities through locally led action.
The ongoing meeting will come up with County Climate Risk Assessment report which will feed in to County Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) of 2023-2028 and also inform Nation Climate Change Action plan (NCCAP). Mr Adan Kanano, Marsabit County CEC for Water, Environment and Natural Resources emphasized that the team would take the exercise serious to enable and guide financing of local led actions through Financing Locally Led Climate Action project (FLLoCA) and other climate finance opportunities. The County Environment and Climate Change Director Mrs Janet Ahatho noted that Climate finance remains central to achieving low-carbon and climate resilient development.
